Bulgasal: Immortal Souls

Before its launch this month, the director of tvN’s Bulgasal: Immortal Souls vows for a “rich and emotional” narrative.

Bulgasal: Immortal Souls pivots around the story of a 600 years old Bulgasal, Dan Hwal (Lee Jin Wook), who can’t kill nor die. He’s been searching for another Bulgasal, Min Sang Woo (Kwon Na Ra), who reincarnated and hides as a human.

With that, Director Jang Young Woo further explains Dan Hwal and Sang Woo’s bittersweet story. He shared, “I thought it was important to allow viewers to keep up with the emotions because the narrative itself is so rich and emotional.”

“And I am confident that I am filming with the hope of the “Korean emotion” and “sad but beautiful story” in this story will be delivered well to viewers through visual stories,” he added.

Furthermore, he also revealed the creation and inspiration of each character. “I tried to express the past and the present by focusing on the things that change and remain unchanged.”

On the series’ filming struggles, “In terms of visuals, I had a lot of worries to express as efficiently as possible within the limited production cost.”

Nevertheless, Director Jang Young Woo’s passion for creating and sharing his imagination with the public made the series more special. He continues, “I tried to capture the Korean culture’s beauty in the video on the premise of the Korean value that can go global. And especially tried to express our old and nature’s beauty as it is.”

On Bulgasal’s Production Process

In addition, he also mentioned trusted co-workers who helped in creating the series. He revealed, “I spent a lot of time and effort on catching key elements and overall concepts, tone, and manner. It includes art director Lee Mok Won, costume director Cho Sang Kyung, filming director Kang Yoon Soon, lighting director Kwon Sung Ho, CG supervisor Lee Yong Sup, and location Kang Ye Sung in the pre-production.”

With the Bulgasal: Immortal Souls’ fantasy and supernatural theme, the director also made sure to capture the attention and hearts of the viewers through their efforts. “When we express the old Korean Peninsula ghosts, we tried to express them as close to people as possible.”

He added, “Like Korean ghosts and not foreign creatures. Therefore, we took the point to reveal the stories and hidden narratives of ghosts by costumes, makeup, art, and acting, rather than excessive CG. Please look forward to a Korean-style creature,” heightening expectations.

Moreover, Director Jang Young Woo also revealed that his ideas are from “the Buddhist tanhwa and the animation “Shinbi Apartment.” He continues, “While preparing for the work, I could feel that there are many precious things that are really fun and have a lot of stories in Korea. Not the foreign monsters and myths that are well known,” boasting the culture of Korea.
