Racket Boys Opening Week Story

Forced to move to a small village in Haenam, Yoon Hae-kang (Tang Jun Sang) gives up his baseball dream. Unfortunately, his parents’ financial resources won’t be able to support his dream. His father Yoon Hyeon-jong (Kim Sang Kyung) becomes the new coach of Haenam Seo Middle School badminton team.

A once badminton prodigy, Hae-kang was tricked to join his dad’s team in a small tournament. Unknown to him, his father badly needs to keep the badminton club alive or it will be disbanded. When the team needs a place to stay, Hyeon-jong decides to have Bang Yoon Dam (Son Sang Yeon), Na Woo Chan (Choi Hyun Wook) and Lee Yong Tae (Kim Kang Hoon) stay in the house provided by the school.

On the day of the small tournament, Hae-kang faces the cold reality of being defeated by an elementary school athlete. His mom Ra Yeong-ja (Oh Na Ra) has also temporarily moved in with the top female badminton player she’s coaching Han Se-yoon (Lee Jae In) and another athlete Lee Han-sol (Lee Ji Won).

Full of passion to redeem his glory, he commits to the team for the upcoming Spring Open. Pitted against a former team member of Haenam Seo racket boys, he summons his once prodigious badminton blood. But will it be enough to make their team live their once glory days?

Racket Boys Opening Week Musings

Based on its launch episodes, Racket Boys might be this season’s dark horse. Set in a small town with a vibrant young cast, you can already assume that it will take an encouraging route. As mentioned in the series, badminton is not a mainstream sport in Korea, thus further amplifying its underdog theme.

We can’t wait to see how the uniquely blended Haenam Seo badminton club works together to keep the team alive. Similarly, supporting Se-yoon in keeping her top athlete badge is another key point in the series.

Tang Jun Sang is really growing in me for his amazing characterization. Give him a few more years and he will be unstoppable as an actor. The combination of the talented young and seasoned actors makes an impressive balance to its storytelling so far.

Writer Jung Bo Hoon (Prison Playbook) has the ability to make a story resonating by building interesting characters. Inserting moralizing scenarios is also expected to be seen a lot in the series. Just like the scenes of the couple who were about to commit suicide but changed direction after receiving kindness from the people of the small village they move in.

It also highlights the generation gap between the old and the young, as well as, the discipline and commitment of aspiring athletes wanting to pursue a career in the sports they love.

Racket Boys is more than just a sports-themed story, it is best watched with family. Catch up on the latest episodes only on Netflix.
