Seoul Vibe

Seoul Vibe Plot Recap

Wanting to realize his car racing dream, Dong-wook (Yoo Ah In), a genius drift driver leaves his job in Saudi Arabia and goes back to Seoul with his sworn brother Joon-gi (Ong Seong Wu), a skilled mechanic.

Reunited with his sister Yoon-hee (Park Ju Hyun) and friends Bok-nam (Lee Kyu Hyung) and DJ Woo (Go Kyung Pyo); things seem to be going well with their plans.

However, Prosecutor Ahn (Oh Jung Se) proposes a deal to spy on the underground operations of moving illegal funds. Moreover, the secret and risky operation involves old and new government officials. In return, the prosecutor promises to grant US visas to all of them and also clean their lawbreaking records.

Having not much choice, Team Sanggye-dong Supreme acquiesces and succeeds in the initial car racing contest set by Chairwoman Kang (Moon Sori). Transporting the slush fund, their involvement with the prosecutor was belatedly found out.

DJ Woo unfortunately was held hostage while Prosecutor Ahn was murdered by Director Lee (Kim Sung Kyun). Cutting a deal with the Chief Prosecutor (Jung Woong In); Dong-wook drew a wedge in Director Lee and Chairwoman Kang’s relationship.

At the opening ceremony of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the Sanggye-dong neighborhood friends pulled off an impossible feat, paving the way to proceed to their ultimate dream.

Seoul Vibe Highlights and Musings

An easy and entertaining watch, the perky narrative of Seoul Vibe would lead you to finish the movie in one sitting.

While covering politics and corruption, the film does not linger on the saddening truth about slush fund investigation and political conspiracies. Instead, it focuses on the mission of the movie and loops all the characters to that goal.

Strangely and impressively, it worked. I wouldn’t say the film is on an awe-inspiring or spectacular level, but the entertainment value is superb. On that note, highly recommending it is inevitable.

Engaging Plot and Characters

Just like the striking line from DJ Woo and Dong-wook, Seoul Vibe focused on the direction of the story. That you don’t bother looking for meaningful messages.

But it doesn’t mean, there’s none; the film served palpable doses of friendship and family love moments among the members of Team Sanggye-dong Supreme.

Portrayal-wise, you can never go wrong with the varying colors of the featured lead cast. They switch to different vibes conforming to the level of humor or emotion they need to present in the scene. Picking a standout character is futile which also points to how the film is deftly-directed.

By utilizing the 1980s as the setting, viewers would be sweetly assaulted by the nostalgic vibe of the 80s. From clothing, music, and the influence of the Western culture – the attention to incorporate the socio-political situation of South Korea at a time when it has just gotten off of a dictatorial government is noteworthy.

Remarkably, the dynamic relationship among the five oddballs easily gravitates as it reminds us of our very own neighborhood friendship circle.

Focused on fancy storytelling about friendship and chasing dreams; the adventure of the lively misfits of Seoul Vibe delivers a movie experience you probably need.
