Park Hae Soo Predicted “Squid Game” Would Make It Big Even Before Its Release

Sharing the behind-the-scenes snippets of Squid Game, Park Hae Soo feels grateful for the success of the series.

Squid Game, a Netflix original series, follows participants in a cryptic survival game with a 45.6 billion dollar prize. Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae Soo) and other players risk their lives to be the sole victor in the extreme game.

This drama took the top spot in the TV program category in 76 locations across the world.

“I expected that there would be a lot of interest, but I am grateful nonetheless,” Hae Soo stated. “I am happy to introduce Korean content to the world, and I am also happy that I am in it,” he added.

Meanwhile, Park Hae Soo found the strength to perform as an exceptional actor owing to Hwang PD’s praise.

Proud to be part of Director Hwang’s work

Park Hae Soo remarked that the series was extremely engaging due to Director Hwang’s storyline. That is why he was so eager to join the project.

“I tried to focus on the psychological part of the character Sang-woo. I was curious about the character’s behavior. I consulted a lot with PD Hwang to decide when to use the crowd psychology or run out. I met people and talked to them. I did a lot of interviews because I wanted to find out about their sense of deprivation and their sense of entitlement.”

Besides this, he noted that the Squid Game director discussed his features while casting him.

“Director Hwang Dong-hyuk talked about my good and evil when casting me. After the last filming and editing, he said to me, ‘Sang-woo should not have been Park Hae-soo’, so it gave me strength. I want to become an actor who will continue to be discovered in the future.”

Forming a brotherly connection with Lee Jung Jae

Park Hae Soo deliberated how he developed a friendship with Lee Jung Jae, with whom he grew up in the same neighborhood in the drama.

“Lee Jung Jae saw my cute side accurately. In fact, the mood makers on the set were Lee Jung-jae and Jungg Ho-yeon. I leaned on it. Senior Lee was at the center of it, approaching my colleagues the fastest and approaching me the most comfortably.”

Bromance continued for the Squid Game cast who went to Lee Jung Jae’s house. There, they ate, enjoyed wine and talked a lot. “He gave a lot of advice about our career paths” Hae Soo added.

A cursed character Sang-woo in Squid Game

Sang-woo, as Hae Soo portrays him, was in a huge amount of debt due to his investment failure when he joined a large corporation. He also confessed his fondness for Squid Game.

“I got a lot of cursing and heard a lot of support while playing Sang-woo in Squid Game. Actually, cursing is cheering for me.”

Likewise, Hae Soo desired to see viewers’ reactions to his swearing.

“The character Sang-woo is a character I created to be scorned. But it made me think about whether he really deserved to be despised. I want to hear more hot reactions.”

Park Hae Soo, in particular, appreciates the evaluation of his character.

“It’s a character that swears, but on the other hand, it was good that there were reviews saying ‘he is middle-aged but sexy.’ I was grateful when I heard the evaluation.”

Squid Game is exclusively available on Netflix worldwide.
