PRESS CONFERENCE: “Oasis” Previews Captivating First Love Story Set In The 1980s

KBS2 TV’s new Monday-Tuesday drama, Oasis, held its production presentation online.

Present at the event are director Han Hee and lead stars Jang Dong Yoon, Seol In Ah and Choo Young Woo.

Oasis depicts the story of three young people who fiercely work hard to protect their dreams, friendship and once-in-a-lifetime first love against the backdrop of a turbulent Korea from the 1980s to the 1990s.

In the drama, Jang Dong Yoon (Search, Tale of Nokdu) plays Lee Du-hak, a poor young man with kind intentions and a pure soul. He embraces a heartfelt love affair when he fell in love at first sight with a transfer student from Seoul. Along with that, he confronts a tumultuous life as he gets caught up in an unexpected incident.

Seol In Ah (Business Proposal) plays Oh Jung-shin who can’t stand injustice so she fights against it. She has a candid and confident personality to work toward achieving her dream. After transferring to a new school, she forms a strong friendship and young love with Lee Du-hak and Choi Cheol-woong, creating unforgettable memories of her school days.

Rookie actor Choo Young Woo takes on the role of Choi Cheol-woong, a friend of Du-hak. They grew up together since childhood. He is an elite who is also at the top of the class. Ambitious and driven, he doesn’t like losing. While he seems to have almost everything, he cannot win the heart of the only girl he likes.

The Creative Process + Filming Stories

Conveying the gist of the drama, Director Han explained the intention of presenting youth stories set in a chaotic time in Korea.

“The background of the era continues from the late 70s to the early 90s, and the core is the story of the 80s. It starts with the idea of what could have happened when the word youth was combined with the situation of the Republic of Korea in the 80s. It would be nice if you could look at the stories of the youth who lived through those days like fireworks.”

Both Jang Dong Yoon and Choo Young Woo put a lot of effort into realizing the perfect Yeosu dialect. “The dialect was the biggest challenge. To learn the Yeosu language, I took the script and studied it,” Jang said.
Echoing the same diligence, Choo also shared the same thought.

“I tried to get used to it while filming in Jeolla province. Senior Lee Han-wi also helped me a lot. I did my best to prepare.”

Regarding the casting, Director Han commented how the three actors came to him as a gift.

Director Han also vouches for the attention they exerted on the dialect used.

“I don’t know how Yeosu people might see it, but to general viewers, I did well enough to be able to approach the character. Even after that, I used dialect for a long time.”

Character Preparations

Regarding the preparations for their roles, the actors express gratitude for the gift-like project.

“Du-hak is attractive because he is a person who lived a life that was not commonly encountered in other works. As an actor with a young career, I thought it was a gift-like work to the extent that I wondered if I would ever see such a work again.” – Jang Dong Yoon

“All of our characters have a roller coaster-like life. It was a work that made me greedy for acting, and it made me feel honored while doing it. It felt difficult, but I also had a strong desire to challenge myself in terms of acting.” – Seol In Ah

What To Expect In Oasis?

Director Han hopes for a consoling treat that can be felt by the viewers when they watch the series.

“I hope you can forget about your worries and heal happily every day, even if it’s just for the moment you enjoy watching this drama.”

Likewise, Choo Young Woo also conveys his affection for the series.

“For those who have experienced this era, it is nostalgic, and those of us who haven’t experienced it feels like a time machine. I wish I could go.”

Oasis will be broadcast for the first time at 9:50 pm on March 6.
