Jirisan Episode 5 Key Moments

“Shut up, you two! Let me focus!”

Without concrete plans, the wife of the recently deceased snake poacher challenged Chief Jo’s relayed general precautions. Amidst the ruckus, Yi-gang spots the possible culprit faintly smiling. He even approached her like old hometown friends.

When she later meets Hyun-jo, she briefs him of Se-wook’s solitary life. He is also cousin to their teammate Yang-sun. but Yi-gang is still not convinced of Hyun-jo’s vision. They head to the station to look for Yang-sun and the team realizes she abandoned the patrol car she used after reaching the restricted trail. As the sun is about to set, Goo-young worries about her safety.

Fortunately, they find her but she is unable to move because of a nearby potato bomb. Yi-gang successfully gets hold of the bomb as Yang-sun shares her cousin Se-wook saw their grandfather on the mountain when the potato bomb exploded. When she confronted her grandfather about the potato bombs, she was told they went missing.

Yi-gang advises her to report to the police first. Hyun-jo is convinced though that the culprit is Se-wook. But Yi-gang responds the police should uncover the truth.

Stubborn Hyun-jo visits Se-wook and confirms the scratch marks. Remembering the clothing of the person who gave yogurt to Private Ahn, Hyun-jo adds another claim that Se-wook also gave the poisoned yogurt drink. Shutting his door, he demands the prying ranger to leave.

“If I can only spot him in the CCTV, I can prove that he’s the criminal.”

The next day, Hyun-jo visits Private Ahn to confirm Se-wook’s identity as the man who meddled Grandma Geum-rye’s backpack and gave the yogurt drink. He continues to probe on evidence that he can find to affirm his deduction.

As Haedong branch rangers busy themselves with station chores, Hyun-jo arrives with recordings. He cites how one bomb is yet to be found, thus the more reason not to let go of the case. Pleading they will only work on the day of the explosion, Yi-gang relents and drags Goo-young and Il-hae to join the search with bribes.

At the police station, Yang-sun’s grandfather strongly denies the allegation despite the pieces of evidence point at him as the culprit. Triggered by Hyun-jo’s visit, Se-wook tries to reach out to someone who is deemed to be his partner in crime. He gets a response not to worry and to carry on with his tasks.

True to what Hyun-jo suspects, they find Se-wook in the CCTV footage while holding a potato bomb. After calling the police, the team huddles on Se-wook’s actions who seemed to have lured his cousin to go to the forest where the second bomb was placed.

At that moment, Se-wook is also set to finish his last task. He visits Yang-sun and brings food for her to eat. He coaxes Yang-sun to drink the poisoned yogurt and admits lying to have seen her grandfather in the forest. Confessing he was really meaning to kill him, he left no trail of evidence just as Yi-gang and the team arrive.

Chasing after Se-wook, the latter escapes as Yi-gang prevented Hyun-jo who almost let the last potato bomb explode. Yang-sun’s grandfather feels aggravated for what Se-wook did and adorably wonders why Goo-young is acting more like a family than he is.

“If I’d trusted you from the start, could we have saved the earlier victims too?”

Hyun-jo feeds information to the police about Se-wook’s previous misdeeds. Yi-gang drags him out and cooks some pancakes, but he knows she’s trying to stop him. Asserting, he really saw the visions, thus, he can’t just ignore those things.

Yi-gang responds that she wants to apologize for not trusting him. She also thanks him for his effort and feels bad how they could have avoided the recent deaths if only she listened to him.

The next day, a hiker sees Jo Dae-jin holding some yellow ribbons, and not far behind Se-wook’s dead body also lays on the ground.

In the 2020 timeline, Yi-gang prepared food for Dowon who was dead tired from patroling with Goo-young. She shares about the potato bomb incident but warns that the real culprit is still hiding since the mountain killings have not ceased since then.

Thinking her senior is pulling a prank, Yi-gang tells her that she came back to uncover that mystery. She also relays the signals she’s getting from someone in the mountain. That someone will point her to who the real criminal is.

Pleading her junior to help with her goal, Yi-gang gives the directions for Do-won to put her unique signals on.

Jirisan Episode 5 Musings

We got to give it to Yi-gang on how daring she is to come back to unearth the cryptic criminal with her disability in Jirisan. This episode I think would address the comments on the slight difficulty for viewers who get confused on the alternating timeline setting. Placing it on the end part does the trick.

Seeing less of the 2020 timeline, this episode solidifies the female lead’s ultimate motivation to return to her old job. Yi-gang’s suspicion of Do Jae-jin, by now has also convinced us that we should be leery about him. But then, giving a leeway since we need concrete proof that he is really evil.

Most likely, heightening the suspense about the culprit would be placed past the middle mark of the series. Thus, we are set to either meet new episode characters and be educated about mountain knowledge, history and stories that we have been getting so far in the series.

While the spirit realm defying communication between Yi-gang and Hyun-jo keeps us engrossed, I still hope that he would wake up soon. Since the story is predominantly fixated on their characters, it would not be a bad idea, if the 2020 timeline would see him escaping a comatose state.

I can’t imagine it to happen in the finale episodes because the 2018 timeline stories inevitably would drag if it will be integrated with additional filler episodes that won’t support the supernatural element fused in the narrative.

Don’t miss the thrilling stories on Jirisan every Saturday and Sunday on iQiyi! Also, below is the highly-anticipated OST from BTS’ Jin.
