Youth Of May Episode 03 & 04 Peak Points

“Let’s not do anything we’ll regret later on. Let’s end this here so we can only remember the good things.”

Baffled at how Hee-tae neutralized the tension, Soo-ryeon and Myeong-hee learn how he knew everything all along. Hee-tae hints at his intention to pursue Myeong-hee.

Coming clean, Myeong-hee tells Hee-tae why she agreed to be her best friend’s stand-in. As she intends to study overseas, she also made him see that they cannot start something deeper because of their different economic status.

Meeting again at Soo-chan’s business opening day, the two families are eager to push the wedding arrangement. Hee-tae’s father also orders his man to trail his son who he sensed to be enamored by Myeong-hee. The latter is also oblivious that Soo-chan is extra caring for her.

“Do you want to go out with me, just until the end of May?”

Pondering on the weight of Myeong-hee’s plan to leave the country for good, Hee-tae continues to create moments to be together with her. He visits the boarding house where she stays as he signed up as the new tutor of the daughter of her landlord.

At night, he makes another sincere confession.

“After what you told me about, I thought hard about the remaining month. And I realized, it’s not the month that we have that I’m afraid of but how much I’ll be hurt after that month is gone. I like you, Myeong-hee. And I’ll continue to like you more and more.”

The next day, Myeong-hee ponders on the sweet night chat she had while Hee-tae talks to the hospital director about Jang Seok-chul’s hospital transfer. When asked why he’s involved with her when he’s not a relative or spouse, Hee-tae vaguely explains their relationship as victim and offender.

Meanwhile, Soo-ryeon learns of her comrade calling her house and gets the message he’s trying to send. However, when she met him at his hideout, he was also tracked as a wanted person. Hee-tae’s father meets her for interrogation and warns her to straighten up less she caused the downfall of the people around her.

Stubborn Soo-ryeon shows defiance even dirtying her father-in-law’s necktie. He warns her that the engagement party will soon befall her and that she should never cross the line moving forward.

Youth of May

“Can you just get engaged with Soo-ryeon?”

Hee-tae joins Myeong-hee in her volunteer work at an orphanage. She even forced him to become a doctor and check on the health of the children. When one of the children fell sick because of the bread Hee-tae gave, his past trauma emerged.

Opening up about how he has treated patients who are activists brought by his friend who currently serves the mandatory military service. One of the patients, Jang Seok-chul had left a trauma to Hee-tae, and he has since been trying to help her.

Entering an almost relationship, Myeong-hee tells him to meet him the next day for her answer if they can go out until the end of May. However, the next day she learns of Soo-ryeon’s predicament of being forced to be engaged to save her family.

Instead of giving a favorable answer, she pleads to Hee-tae if he can get engaged to her best friend when he already rejected Soo-ryeon’s suggestion upfront.

Youth Of May Episode 03 & 04 Musings

Initially, Youth of May is not included on my weekly recap plate. But given its dozen-episode run and the main leads really engaging me as a viewer, I decided to include it. Its trite rich-boy-poor-girl love story has a quaint flavor because of its setting. I don’t think it will also go to typical melodramas that would suck our emotions dry because the characters are all rational thinkers.

Moreover, the cast as a whole is really efficiently suiting up to their roles. Focusing on the romance aspect was also an engrossing point. Honestly, I thought the tumultuous Gwangju uprising would take the bulk of the story. But I think, while it will be mentioned in passing, the individual stories would be more highlighted especially the love conflict.

The preview episode seems to head to the forced engagement. Hopefully, a viable solution that would make everyone happy would be drawn. Notably, I like the music, wardrobe, and production design of the series. Lee Do Hyun is especially dreamy in those colorful stripe shirts. I won’t be surprised if it will be picked as a resurging male fashion fad just like Go Min Si and her feminine outfits.

Incidentally a calming watch, Youth of May should be on your radar if you like well-portrayed romance stories. Catch the latest episodes on Viu.
