Melancholia Episode 3 & 4 Key Moments

The Start of IMO

In the latest episodes, Seung-Yoo came running to the examination hall for the qualifying exam for IMO. Being a math genius, he looks serious whenever he solves math problems and easily got a perfect score.

Meanwhile, Sung Ye-Rin also had a perfect score in the exam. However, she’s not pleased that both of them can join the IMO.

After the acceptance of Seung-Yoo in IMO, Yoon-Soo congratulated him and asked if he’s now willing to study math together. Seung-Yoo gladly accepted this.

Yoon-Soo asked Seung-Yoo and Ye-Rin to come up with their speech topic about a certain mathematical idea that they want. Yoon-Soo recommended a book to Seung-Yoo which he immediately liked.

Seung-Yoo wanted to meet the author of the book and Yoon-Soo affirmed that he knows this author. Together, they went to a nursing home and Seung-Yoo met the author of the book and asked him questions.

It happens that this man is Yoon-Soo’s father but he doesn’t recognize her anymore. Seung-Yoo and Yoon-Soo had a great time together and even eat outside but Kyu-Young saw them.

The Scandal

When the list of students that got accepted on the calculus club, Kyu-Young got angry because he has a high score but wasn’t able to get in. Kyu-Young and other students protested about Yoon-Soo’s standard.

Seung-Yoo got worried for Yoon-Soo because he knows that these students cared so much about their grades and they might do something bad to her.

Kyu-Young thought that Yoon-Soo favors Seung-Yoo so much and even spread the news that he saw them on a late-night date. He even said that both of them are too close to each other. Things got messy when Kyu-Young also spread a malicious photo of Yoon-Soo and Seung-Yoo.

Seung-Yoo got so angry and went to Kyu-Young and punched him hard. Kyu-Young also did the same. Later on, the professors are asking them why they fought, but they didn’t say a word.

Trip to Jeju Island

When the malicious comments are taken down, Kyu-Young apologizes to Yoon-Soo and Seung-Yoo for his rude behavior.

Later on, Seung-Yoo and Yoon-Soo went to Jeju Island together. He took lots of pictures and brainstormed on what would his speech be about. They went to museums and watched the stars together as they glitter at the night sky.

When it’s time to go home, Ye-Rin saw Yoon-Soo sleeping on Seung-Yoo’s shoulders and secretly took a picture.

Seung-Yoo’s Speech

When it’s time for Ye-Rin and Seung-Yoo to present their speech, Seung-Yoo met one of his professors at MIT when he was 10 years old and gave him flashbacks that results in a panic attack.

The episode revealed that Seung-Yoo’s roommate in MIT took his own life and leaves a mark on Seung-Yoo. At first, Seung-Yoo wanted to give up IMO but then realized the advice of Yoon-Soo.

Seung-Yoo conquered his anxiety and bravely presented his speech about artificial intelligence that makes his audience in awe.

Melancholia Episode 3&4 Musings

More than the dreamy looks Seung-Yoo, I’m so glad he slowly opens himself to Yoon-Soo. The episode made me appreciate math even more as how engrossingly introduced to be seen in every place. Something that normal people may not be aware of.

Both of the lead characters see the world differently because they can’t let mathematics out of their minds for a second.

In terms of the happenings in school, Kyu-Young and Ye-Rin both envy Seung-Yoo because of his mathematics skills. I just felt that both of them felt pressured because of their parents who always wanted for them to excel.

melancholia

I actually don’t hate the two because we can’t blame them why they did bad things just to get on top. However, I am so glad that Yoon-Soo is beside Seung-Yoo and ready to guide him.

I also noticed that the parents in Melancholia take their children as spawns and see who is the smartest. For me, being excellent is not sufficient to be happy especially if you’re not genuine about it.

The students keep proving themselves to their parents that they forget they have the right to be happy doing the things they love.

I also love how aesthetically pleasing the 4th episode is. When Seung-Yoo and Yoon-Soo went to Jeju Island, they had a great time appreciating the place and the beauty of being infinite.

It is also very evident that Seung-Yoo started to see Yoon-Soo as an amazing woman. The way Seung-Yoo looks at her and appreciates her beauty in the pictures he took during their trip captured a heart-fluttering moment.
