My Youth Episodes 9 and 10 Highlights

“Is a guy like me okay for you?”

Hae frantically searches for Je-yeon through the nearby hospitals and almost loses his mind from worry. Then, a call from the medical staff sends him rushing to the hospital, where Je-yeon was admitted for acute appendicitis, awaiting surgery. Luckily, she isn’t severely injured from the accident, but the pain is severe from the appendicitis.

Relieved to see Je-yeon, Hae promises to stay by her side and not push her away again. Enlisting Seok-ju’s help in taking care of Nu-ri, Hae stays with Je-yeon until she recovers. But Nu-ri is still mad at Hae for pushing her to live with her mother. Cue: a fun sequence of Nu-ri running away from home briefly and Hae catching up with her. They both apologize to each other, Hae for hurting Nu-ri with his words and Nu-ri for meeting Chan behind Hae’s back.

Having reconciled, Hae tells Nu-ri that he has been looking into photography prep schools to support her. And she declares she is taking the photography practical exam to get into college. Hae roots for her to do well on the exam, and all is well between them again. Interestingly, Pil-do was the reason Nu-ri got into photography. While staying at Pil-do’s house in the past, Nu-ri got intrigued by a camera, and Pil-do showed her how to use it.

“When the water in my pond froze over, I suppose I didn’t know where to go.”

Watching Nu-ri pursue her dream, Je-yeon looks back on her life, wondering what she would do had she not become a manager. We see Je-yeon’s college life unfold in flashbacks. From her family going bankrupt, to losing her scholarship, Je-yeon had it tough, barely making ends meet until she eventually dropped out of college and started working as a road manager, climbing up the ladder until she became a team leader when we first met her.

When things got unbearable, Je-yeon would think about Hae. She kept dropping by the bookstore they visited during their high school days, but unfortunately, it was closed down.

“The disease only started progressing recently.”

Things were progressing well on the romance front between Je-yeon and Hae. And even on the work front, Je-yeon wrapped things up at the company and parted ways with Pil-do on good terms while also occasionally helping Tae-rin out at her new company. However, that is when things turned quite dark with Hae’s illness arc.

With his next check-up approaching, Hae has Seok-ju tag along, believing it would be better to hear from the doctor himself than for Hae to explain things. Rightfully, Seok-ju feels both shocked and hurt, having been left in the dark. He wonders if Nu-ri knows about it too, but Hae argues he didn’t want to worry her before the college entrance exam. Mad at Hae, Seok-ju has him leave first and cries alone. Luckily, Tae-rin shows up and comforts him a bit without pressuring him about anything. (Side note: Seok-ju and Tae-rin are now seeing each other.)

Parting ways with Seok-ju, Hae hangs out with Je-yeon. Yet he gets dizzy and retreats to a corner until he gets better. Worried, Je-yeon goes looking for him until she finds him. She doesn’t interrupt him or say anything, patiently waiting until he returns on his own. As we end this week, it starts snowing. It is the first snow of the season, so everyone is excited. But we can’t help but worry about what is yet to come.

My Youth Episodes 9 and 10 Musings

With the romance now sailing, the remaining time will mostly focus on Hae’s terminal illness. Which has us worried about crying our hearts out. Hae’s doctor mentioned a clinical trial that takes place abroad. If Hae partakes in it, we might get a time skip and a separation trope. Then again, Je-yeon is now jobless, so it might be a good idea for her to go with Hae. Or perhaps the drama will have Chan tag along as part of his totally unearned redemption arc. Anyway, we hope Hae makes it through and gets his happily ever after with Je-yeon.
