“We are here to protect the era we came from. Catch the red-white masked man and find the Guardian stone.”
Reunited with Shin-ju, Lee Yeon reiterates their mission to find the red-white masked man when his right hand voiced out his intention to become a freedom fighter.
Accidentally hearing the conversation between his brother and Shin-ju, Lee Rang ponders why Lee Yeon seems to be not who really is. He also learns that his brother intends to leave.
Checking the commotion at Myeoyeongak, Lee Yeon knew the drinking session against Hong-joo is a farce. Eventually, she won the contest to save one of her gisaengs from the harassment of a proud Japanese officer.
Meanwhile, Moo-young goes to a place to retrieve a young girl with strange eyes. He then sets her to look at Lee Yeon so he can be cursed.
“Finally, the three of us are reunited. But why is it like this?”
Later, he meets Hong-joo and shares that the reason why he wants to kill Lee Rang is that he wants to return the pain he had for losing his brother.
Lee Yeon sees Hong-joo in town but when he meets her eyes, he suddenly lost his vision. Moo-yeong confirms her feelings has not changed when he was stopped by Hong-joo from wielding his sword at Lee Yeon.
Hong-joo learns the curse Moo-young unleashed is Saetani. Anyone who looks at her eyes will go blind.
Shin-ju and Lee Rang work on the cure of Lee Yeon’s curse while Hong-joo again asserts to make Lee Yeon hers. Still, the latter refuses so she asks her right hand to spread the news to the monsters that Lee Yeon is blind.
Soon enough, a band of monsters arrives at Myeoyeongak. Defeating the monsters, he was lured to a Buddhist temple where Moo-young is waiting ready to attack.
“That day, I made my first bucket list. Even if I were to leave, I’d wish Rang had someone by his side.”
Making Lee Yeon a target of his arrows, Lee Yeon barely defeated Moo-young by utilizing thunder and his sword. Finally confronting the source of the curse, Lee Yeon meets the Saetani.
Years ago, he promised a young girl named Lea a wish should she need it. However, he was not able to grant it when she needed it because he was no longer a mountain god at that time. Recognizing the real identity of the Saetani, Lee Yeon finally appeased her so she can move on to the afterlife.
Meanwhile, Shin-ju and Rang who were put inside the well by Moo-young are rescued by Lee Yeon and Yeo-hee, a half-human-half-mermaid. The latter was saved by Rang before and knows he was in danger because of the scale that she forced him to receive.
Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 Episode 3 Musings
A promise broken by three former mountain gods is highlighted in the 3rd episode of Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938.
While Moo-young is bent on his revenge he chooses not to accept Hong-joo’s insights of how that broken promise was inevitable. At that time, they all have varying situations that did not allow them to commit to the vow they pledge when they were mountain gods.
Soon enough, Hong-joo and even Rang will realize that the Lee Yeon they’ve been dealing with is not from their time. It further draws curiosity to who emancipated Moo-young and if he was freed from the present timeline.
Fragments of Eun-ho’s story are expected to connect with Lee Yeon’s mission in 1938. At some point, he will be roped in the goal of independence fighters since they are also against a hidden demon.
The blossoming romance between Rang and Yeo-hee is primed to be a relief for some intense battles ahead.
