Yi Hwi fights her battle on her own to finally bring Lord Sangheon down in episode 18 of The King’s Affection.
Considering Lord Sangheon might know the King’s grave secret, Yi Hwi uses this chance to expose her grandfather’s crimes without risking anybody precious to her.

The King’s Affection Episode 18 Key Moments
“My father found out about His Majesty’s secret”
Learning about Ji-un’s upcoming marriage, Jaeun immediately goes to check on Yi Hwi. When he sees her practicing sword dueling, Yi Hwi doesn’t want to take it easy, even if she appears exhausted and in need of rest.
Jaeun then confronts Ji-un in order to ascertain the true reason for his intention of marrying So-eun. For Ji-un, he responds that the marriage is probably for the best, as Yi Hwi and he will never be together.
After punching Ji-un in the face to make him realize what he was doing, Jaeun asks him again why he was doing it. Ji-un responds he would never accept So-eun’s marriage unless there was a good reason for it.
Relaying to Jaeun the real reason, Ji-un discloses the truth that Seok-jo is aware of Yi Hwi’s secret.
“When I had been hurt by you and had wanted to end my life, my friends made me want to live again.”
Verifying which plant killed the late King, Ji-un searched the busohwa plant and found one. Jil-geum also discovers the pharmacy where sonangcho can be purchased.
However, as Ji-un arrives at the location, he finds his father and later learns that the pharmacy is under Lord Sangheon’s control. Leading to Jil-geum’s visit to the plant, which is a trap.
Trying to save his friend, Seok-jo tries to stop his son. Ji-un continues to risk his life to save Jil-geum because his friends made him choose to live again after Seok-jo had given him a painful past.
“It was His Majesty’s wish that this remained a secret to you. But your father poses the gravest danger to His Majesty.”
Fearing that Lord Sangheon may take Court Lady Cho and Eunuch Hong hostage, Yi Hwi urges they immediately depart the palace. She also feels that she can win the fight without them.
Having the proof she has, Yi Hwi will use it against Sangheon. She will reveal that her grandfather murdered the late King and plotted treason, and she might as well use it to bring her grandfather down.
Prior to their journey to a safe location, Court Lady Cho requests from Jaeun that they pay a visit to Ji-un’s house.
She further let Ji-un know that Yi Hwi was a court maid before becoming the prince, and that she was Dam-i. She deliberately tells him that Commander Jung killed the prince, mistaking him for Dam-i.
Although it was the King’s wish that the secret stay hidden from Ji-un, Court Lady Cho believes that Ji-un’s father poses the gravest threat to Yi Hwi’s life.
The King’s Affection Episode 18 Musings
Yi Hwi’s decision to fight her war alone in The King’s Affection has almost certainly achieved a pinnacle. Bearing in mind that Ji-un is getting married, all she needs to do now is finally accomplish her goal, even if it means risking her own life, because she has nothing to lose.
We have witnessed her throw away her life as a court maid in this episode, as she burns the book Ji-un personally transcribed for her.
Impressively, Seok-jo’s character development is astounding in the 18th episode of The King’s Affection. He no longer obeys Lord Sangheon’s command and is more concerned with his son’s safety and feelings. Here we have seen him not quickly reporting back to Sangheon.
Furthermore, in the preview for episode 19, I believe it will be a heartbreaking episode since another person whom Yi Hwi cherishes will be taken away.
There are a lot of battles to fight in the coming week. And indeed, much more so in the bittersweet story of The King’s Affection. I’m mostly worried about Yi Hwi’s ability to survive it all, even if she does reveal to the world that the King is a woman.
