True Beauty Episode 9 Key Moments

“Am I on a hidden camera?”

Bewildered on what she just heard, Ju-kyung runs away to the forest with Su-ho chasing after her. Suspecting she could be in a hidden camera, Su-ho assures her that what he just said is true. That he likes her dearly and that he is also nervous like her.

He hangs the necklace he bought for the still baffled Ju-kyung. Asking if she feels the same way, Ju-kyung endearingly describes the meaning of a girl’s first love in detail. But when she realized she revealed too much information, she stops herself and run away again leaving Su-ho faintly smiling and amused.

“Why else would my heart be fluttering? It means that I like you. I like you a lot actually. I dream of you at night and even during the day. Despite being lazy, I get up before my alarm rings to hurry to school to see you. And when I see you…”

“I’m afraid the kids will turn against me once they see my real face.”

Frolicking in the after-taste of having her very first boyfriend, Ju-kyung lingered on the high moment. That when she sees Su-jin, she mindlessly heads to where she is and realizes too late that her make up is not on.

Ju-kyung explains the bullies’ from her previous school’s reason for making fun of her stems from her ugly face. Hence, discovering how make-up can hide the flaws of her face helped her start anew. Understanding the weight of Ju-kyung’s woe, Su-jin promises she got her back.

The next day at school, Su-ho is ready for his new life as a school boy with a girlfriend. Unfortunately for him, his favorite girl, afraid of earning the ire of bullies, pleads to keep their relationship a secret. She is afraid that she would be a subject of retaliation.

“We’d like a table with a CCTV blind spot and extremely secluded where no one can see us.”

Even on their first date, Ju-kyung is extra cautious of being caught with her relationship with Su-ho. Favoring whatever she wants Su-ho just amuses himself with her line of thinking.

Mildly complaining how he can’t feel they are dating at school, Ju-kyung responds that she feels it strongly and was about to reveal that she named him as “boyfriend” on her phone’s contact list. But when Su-ho said her name is just her name on his phone, she halts and carries on with their date. But then, their classmates spot them, so Ju-kyung pushes him to hide under the table.

Paranoid that another encounter might happen, they walk in the mall talking over the phone with Su-ho trailing her. Just when Ju-kyung insists on heading back home, Su-ho throws a surprise by revealing why he really brought him in that mall. That is for her to meet her favorite make-up artist, Selena.

Happy at meeting her idol, Ju-kyung even won a gift on Selena’s event for answering a beauty tip question. She also stumbles on her at the rest room and gave constructive feedback on her make-up.

Su-ho obviously fawning over his girl thinks she is better than her idol. At night, Ju-kyung contemplates on her hope of going to a make-up academy, but her problem is the cost of tuition fee.

“She stayed up late looking for a part-time job.”

To earn money for her make-up academy enrolment, Ju-kyung resorts to look for part-time jobs which drains her energy making her sleep at school. While taking a nap, Su-jin learns of her part-time work hunting and also recognized the necklace Su-ho dropped last time work by JU=u-kyung. It finally dawned on her those baffling small moments linking her friend and the friend she also likes.

Su-ho and Su-jin meanwhile meet with their parents for dinner, but escape the situation when the get-together felt suffocating. Su-jin’s father start rambling on Su-ho’s almost perfect school performance comparing it to his daughter’s. Hence, Su-ho made an excuse that they will leave to study.

Still struggling to get a part-time job, Ju-kyung bumps on Seo-jun and lands a modelling gig with him. Unable to comprehend Seo-jun’s peevish attitude is caused his knowledge of her relationship with Su-ho, they keep bickering while working on the job.

While Ju-kyung thinks they are just doing the pictorial, she is oblivious of what Seo-jun really feels. They grab some food after, so she takes the opportunity to ask how he named his girlfriends on his phone contact list before, and gets the exact opposite of how Su-ho named her.

Ju-kyung also takes the opportunity to tell Seo-jun about her relationship. Knowing what she was about to confess, he forbids her, but she goes on and reveals she is going out with Su-ho to his dismay.

“Sounds like you fell for a very amateur scheme.”

Finally talking over the phone after their long busy day, the new love birds quickly chat, but when Su-ho sees Ju-kyung’s father the conversation was cut off. Ju-kyung’s scam magnet father left the house to hunt the man who scammed him, only to be scammed again. He pleads Su-ho to keep it a secret from Ju-kyung.

Shamelessly tagging along his daughter’s boyfriend, Ju-kyung aboji settles at Su-ho’s place. They even bond over noodles and watching soccer. The next day, Ju-kyung aboji promises to go home after fixing the mess at Su-ho’s house.

True Beauty

“You can ask me to pay for your makeup classes.”

Building their “list of firsts”, Su-ho brings Ju-kyung for some exercise and promises to grant her a wish if she can flip him over. Utilizing her charm and tickling skills, she subdued Su-ho who beams at her being mischievous.

She refuses his offer to pay for her make-up classes, instead whispers what she wants to have, but gives a leeway that she is not forcing him. After fixing herself, she goes to where Su-ho is and gets surprised to receive a picture message from him.

When she opened it, she sees a screen capture of Su-ho’s phone calling her number with her name changed to “girlfriend” already. A gesture following the clue she gave him earlier of her changing his name as boyfriend on her phone contact list.

“I can’t believe I’m here, when he has a date with his girlfriend.”

Fate favors Su-ho whose new-found happiness is spending time with Ju-kyung. When they accidentally got wet from the splash of a passing bus, he brings her to his place to change her wet clothes and go for an instant house date.

He lets her enter his forbidden room filled with Se-yeon’s and shares how he used to compose songs. He also obliges playing the piano for her until Ju-kyung’s tummy signals they should eat.

And what’s a house date without watching a movie? The two of them being fan of horror stories settle to the most favored movie any boy would want to watch with the girl he likes. Unfortunately for Su-ho, he had to cave in to Ju-kyung’s teasing of him being weak on horror films.

While comfortably settled on the sofa, they are not aware that Ju-kyung aboji has not left Su-ho’s house yet. He apparently saw alcohol bottles at his house and went a round for it. What’s worse is that he is under the table listening and feeling to what the lovers are talking about and might do.

True to what Ju-kyung said, Su-ho is a scaredy cat. But he can multi-task to take advantage of the situation and enjoys the sweet time with his girl. At one frightening scene, he starts holding Ju-kyung’s hand. At another, he whines at her promise that it is not frightening.

But fright is the last thing for him to think about that moment when his eyes locked on Ju-kyung and sparks fly. He leads Ju-kyung to lean on the sofa corner while he readies for a sweet all-kill kiss. But just as he is about to plant the kiss on Ju-kyung’s lips, a hand grabbed his leg scaring Ju-kyung and him.

Su-ho realizes the situation when he saw his girlfriend’s father, but Ju-kyung who already grabbed a pot, slams it on her father’s face.

True Beauty Episode 9 Musings

I had a hearty laugh in that sweet-horror-movie-house-date-turned-disaster. Again, it emphasized on how True Beauty picks on quality scenes despite its predictable premise. Just what excuse will the two love birds come up with for the almost-kiss in front of Ju-kyung’s father, let’s hope it’ll be creative. *grin

While the series is clear on its love line centered between Ju-kyung and Su-ho now, I appreciate that the story is not making our equally adorable Seo-jun function as how typical second male lead is in a story. Even if he won’t get the girl (as always he gets noona viewers’ love), he is given endearing moments with Ju-kyung. In a way he felt definitely not neglected in the picture.

Su-jin is actually scaring me because she has a tendency to self-destruct and in the process affect her relationship with people closest to her might get affected. Given she knows Ju-kyung’s secret and she came to realization that she has feelings for Su-ho complicates things now. Plus that scene of her showing she’s shooting dagger with her eyes at the sight of Su-ho embracing Ju-kyung is another evidence of looming problem if jealousy takes over her rationality.

True Beauty airs on tvN every Wednesday and Thursday.
