K-DRAMA RECAP: “Would You Marry Me” Episodes 9 and 10

It is one predicament after another for our leads. From dealing with the annoying ex-fiancé and giving us a brief breakup and noble idiocy to putting their heads together to catch the devious uncle.

The penultimate week ends on a heavy note, though, as our leading man finally uncovers the truth behind his parents’ death.

Would You Marry Me Episodes 9 and 10 Highlights

“You cheated on me and made me a divorcee overnight, leaving me with all the debt.”

As shameless as ever, the ex-fiancé wants Me-ri to end it with the “fake” one now that the “real” one is back. And when she doesn’t go along, he threatens to expose her for fraud. But the joke is on him as Me-ri already decided to come clean. Instead of living in worry, she would rather admit to it all. What gets to Me-ri, though, is the ex-fiancé’s threat to get Woo-ju socially buried by branding him as an immoral guy who had a fling with a married woman and pretended to be her husband, unless Me-ri breaks up with him.

For the next few days, Me-ri remains absent-minded. She keeps thinking about the ex-fiancé’s threats and avoids Woo-ju, who thinks she feels down because of his grandmother’s words, and tries his best to cheer her up.

When Me-ri finally agrees to meet Woo-ju, they go on a picnic that he prepared. Woo-ju offers to talk to his grandmother for Me-ri and explain the situation to her. But Me-ri claims she had a change of heart and decided to keep the house. If she holds out for one more month, she can get a hefty sum of money and turn her life around. Also, it isn’t like revealing the truth will increase her chances with Woo-ju.

Sensing something is off, Woo-ju asks if Me-ri wants to break up. And she confirms it and walks away, barely holding back her tears, leaving Woo-ju puzzled. He texts Me-ri to get some rest and talk later when she feels better. And reading the text, Me-ri’s tears flow down her face.

“With him gone, we can start over.”

Learning that our leads broke up, the ex-fiancé asserts they should get back together and live happily in the townhouse. But Me-ri won’t let him back into her life. Also, she doesn’t plan to keep the house, resolving to reveal the truth to Sang-hyeon. But the ex-fiancé can’t let this opportunity slip through his fingers, staking a claim to half of the house and threatening Me-ri to make both her and Woo-ju pay if she gives up the house. He even spews nonsense about Me-ri pretending to break up to fool him and meeting Woo-ju behind his back.

The fight escalates, and the ex-fiancé turns violent and almost beats Me-ri. But luckily, Woo-ju arrives in time to block him, urging Me-ri to hand in the divorce decree, asserting he will take responsibility for what he did. So, the ex-fiancé had better leave Me-ri alone. When he doesn’t back down even after getting punched, Woo-ju threatens the ex-fiancé with a recording, which shows he is aware of everything and even schemes to put his hands on the house.

When they are alone, Woo-ju tells Me-ri that she should have shared the situation with him instead of carrying the burden alone. It was tough for him to be apart from her. And instead of breaking up with him for his sake, Woo-ju wants Me-ri to stay by his side no matter what.

“I may be able to retrieve the house that was lost through the raffle.”

The bakery’s 80th anniversary is around the corner. So, Woo-ju’s grandmother tells Woo-ju to bring in his girlfriend, promising to be good to her. Dressed up, Me-ri greets Grandmother along with Woo-ju. They don’t talk much, but Grandmother seems fond of Me-ri, inviting her over so they can chat together sometime.

Learning Sang-hyeon will attend the event, Me-ri takes off abruptly, and Woo-ju plans to follow her. But the cat is already out of the bag, and Sang-hyeon learns the truth after overhearing Me-ri’s conversation with Grandmother. Still, our leads are saved in such an unexpected way.

Originally, the department store CEO staged the raffle to offer the townhouse as a bribe to get some work done. But Me-ri and Woo-ju got in the way. So, Sang-hyeon was tasked to find a way to retrieve the townhouse from them. Having figured out their secret, he jumps at the idea of canceling their win and having our leads return the house. But Jin-gyeong learns about the bribery and seals a deal with him. In return for turning a blind eye to the fake marriage issue, she will keep mum about the bribery.

“Why would you do that?”

For now, our leads are blissfully unaware that Sang-hyeon is onto them. But they have a bigger problem to deal with. Sensing he is about to get caught, Sinister Uncle visits Grandmother and switches her medication before brazenly listing his many crimes, sending her into a heart attack. He wanted her dead, but luckily, Grandmother survives, yet remains unconscious.

Apparently, Sinister Uncle didn’t want to take over the bakery, but to embezzle funds and then bring it to ruin and sell it in pieces. With the first part done, he slanders Grandmother and blames her for his crimes. But Woo-ju is onto his scent. At first, he feels bad for suspecting someone who is like a father figure to him. But Me-ri assures Woo-ju that those who betray our trust are the ones at fault. So, he should get to the bottom of it and do his best to save the bakery.

“Was it you, Uncle?”

Sinister Uncle has his affair partner come from the States so they can execute their plan. And having confirmed his suspicions, Woo-ju joins hands with his cousin (who already knew about his father’s infidelity) to expose Sinister Uncle. They make it seem like Grandmother woke up, so Sinister Uncle will make a move. Which he does, instructing his partner to sneak into the hospital and kill Grandmother to cover their tracks. But she gets caught in the act, and Grandmother’s name is cleared.

Still, there is no proof to tie Sinister Uncle to that woman. And she plans to take the fall for everything so that their son will have someone to look after him. However, Sinister Uncle only cares about saving his own skin, rummaging through the house until he finds the evidence that the woman had on him, starting from killing Woo-ju’s parents. He is about to destroy the evidence just as Woo-ju shows up. And he is appalled to learn that the one he deemed another father is actually the murderer of his parents.

Would You Marry Me Episodes 9 and 10 Musings

That was a heavy week, especially episode 10, which centered around Sinister Uncle’s crimes. That man is treacherous, so we hope Woo-ju didn’t go there alone without backup. Still, it was nice to see Me-ri step in to support Woo-ju, as it was mostly him helping her. She remained by his side all along and helped him devise the plan to catch Sinister Uncle and his partner.

With only one week left, the drama has two major plotlines to wrap up: the sinister uncle and the fake marriage issue. Not to mention the ex-fiancé who will likely remain a nuisance to the bitter end. Fingers crossed, we get a happy ending for our leads that includes a real wedding and, though it might be a bit hard, them living together in the townhouse.
