Youth of May Episodes 9 & 10 Key Moments

Deciding to leave Gwangju for good, Hee-tae and Myeong-hee make the necessary arrangements. However, with the enforced Martial Law, they were forced to stay in the hospital when Hee-tae took the blow for Myeong-hee who was about to be hurt by a military officer.

Soo-ryeon also checks on her comrades who have suffered from the suppression of the military force. The situation gets worse which made the two argue as Myeong-hee insists to stay in the chaotic situation of the hospital while Hee-tae wants to leave the city.

Relenting to her wish, he sets a time that they should leave the city. Meanwhile, Soo-ryeon is caught by a soldier, but thanks to a friendly police officer, she and the other captives were let go. She bumps with Soo-chan who tried to discourage her patriotic cause. But she still chooses to leave her family.

Youth of May

Gwangju in Chaos

The deployed military officers impose the command given to them sparingly to bystanders and even innocent civilians. Jin-A and her friend are among the civilians who end up at the hospital where Myeong-hee and Hee-tae are treating patients. If not for Hee-tae’s first-aid, Jin-a would have not survived after fainting because of the blow on her head that she also suffered.

Soo-chan who also kindly vouches for a young woman was also beaten rashly. Even the police officer who helped Soo-ryeon sadly died probably earning the ire of the soldiers for letting the rounded people leave. What’s worse, Myung-soo and Jung-tae also sneaked out to help celebrate their teammate’s birthday. But they were caught up in the mayhem.

Fortunately, the two were able to get back safely.  Just as Myeong-hee and Hee-tae proceed to their plan of leaving, Myeong-hee’s father arrives to pick her and Myung-soo up. Giving time for the father and daughter pair to talk, Hee-tae and Dr. Yoo give an excuse to fix something, but they soon confront a military vehicle.

Youth of May Episodes 9 & 10 Musings

An emotionally heavy week, the 9th and 10th episodes of Youth of May preview an even more heartbreaking finale. All the stubborn characters in K-Dramaland signed up to be on the series, to be honest. *chuckles

Initially, I thought everything is Soo-ryeon’s fault? *chuckles A lot of people sacrificed for her, still, her character’s weight in the story is a crucial point. Then, there’s Myeong-hee’s self-sacrificing nature which also caused troubles not just to her, but with Hee-tae.

Down to the finale week, we ought to brace ourselves for the approaching conclusion. Beautifully crafted, this drama is a sweet deviation from youth stories for its compelling depth. It stays true to a genuine reality that there are hopeless and disheartening cases that do not warrant a happy picture.

Reading about Gwangju Uprising is helpful to understand and empathize with the background of this series. Bringing together the pain of that tragic event to harmonize in the fictional love story presented is commendable.

Will there be light at the end of the tunnel for these young people fighting for their family, love, and country?

Don’t miss the finale of Youth of May on June 8.
