K-Drama Review: “Check Out The Event” Traces The Painful & Hopeful Moments of A Breakup Process

Check Out The Event leads viewers to an unexpected reminiscence of what could have been done to save a once cherished relationship.

Watching almost a four-hour drama series about letting go of someone you love was made interesting by this special drama by MBC. It would have been nice if it ran longer because the screenplay was penned with utmost commitment and genuine love pep talks.

Anyone with a mild or serious case of “one that got away” would surely feel the heartfelt lines about love mentioned in the series.

Check Out The Event Quick Plot Recap

*Spoiler Alert

Being in a relationship for five years, Ha Song-yi (Bang Minah) surely was not prepared when one day, her boyfriend Park Do-kyum (Kwon Hwa Woon) declares they should end their relationship.

She refuses to accept the sudden breakup especially since his reason is vague. Fighting hard, Song-yi takes the couple trip opportunity they won to save the relationship. However, Do-kyum remains firm with his decision.

It turns out that Do-kyum was scammed and he can’t make himself to let Song-yi know it. Despite hurting himself and Song-yi in the process, he wants to resolve his problem on his own.

But when the travel guide Ji-kang (Ahn Woo Yeon) expressed interest with Song-yi, he subconsciously marks his territory. Inevitably, Song-yi discovers the truth he was hiding from her.

Feeling dejected of how little her boyfriend thought of her to not confess the real reason why he wants to stop the relationship, she accepts their sad reality.

Takeaway Love Quotes

“Don’t do this. Don’t look at me as if I’m a piece of trash you can’t get rid of. Something that annoys you like crazy. The person who was thrown out like a piece of trash was me, not you.”

“We used to like each other. Why is it me liking him alone now?”

“If it hurts to love someone, you should know to let go.”

“Why did we break up? Give me a perfectly logical reason. Tell me why you suddenly changed in a single day from saying you love me. Give me a reason that would persuade me immediately. Why do you hate me? All I needed was you.”

Check Out The Event Peak Points + Series Musings

Shot in the scenic Jeju island, the disheartening moments were somehow cushioned by the beautiful setting of the story.

Although focusing on Song-yi and Do-kyum’s love journey, the other pair of couples also have striking moments capturing varying degrees of love.

The young couple spotlights how perpetually disregarding the same cause of relationship disagreements would blow up one day. Unfortunately, it’s a kind of impasse, that would eventually not work anymore.

Meanwhile, the middle-aged couple proves that years of maturing individually and together can set a strong relationship foundation. A kind of attachment that can withstand even the worst scenario that could happen to a couple. Like the featured couple who lost their only child.

“There are so many things I won’t know until you say it.”

Bracing my heart to the lead couple’s emotional scenes became a natural thing as I watch this series. While there are a lot of lines I loved in the narrative, the above-mentioned quote from Song-yi is my favorite.

It sums up the culprit of their bittersweet romance, and also reminds us that honesty is as important as love in a relationship.

Do-kyum’s little confidence in Song-yi for him to assume that she won’t understand his predicament appears to be a perfect example of a neglected reality that caused unfortunate closures of love stories that were really meant to be.

Bang Minah and Kwon Hwa Woon impressively take the viewers to their characters’ poignant moments. The most important perhaps is how they prod us in choosing to protect love than giving up on it when a problem arises.

Also, how seeing someone at his worst repeatedly and allowing someone to discover it pushes a lingering attachment. The kind that can brave even an unyielding relationship setback.

A Unique Recounting of Love Narrative

Exploring romance in an unusual way by highlighting the breakup process is a refreshing deviation in K-Dramas.

Check Out The Event executes a well-written story full of emotions and love lessons in just four episodes.

Nonetheless, evident drawbacks are visible but forgivable. Like Song-yi’s loop in trying to win back her ex-boyfriend and Do-kyum’s petty breakup reason.

Closing the story neatly and sealing the drama’s primary messages about love created a buffer for viewers to appreciate shattered romantic ties.

Song-yi and Do-kyum impart a purposeful prescription that a second chance at love requires a time out. A moment of self-love is also a must.

Mutually understanding that deciding to be together again will not induce a clean slate.

Chances are the same fights will spring from previous mistakes. But the same connected hearts keep the love ablaze.

Check Out The Event is streaming on iQiyi.
