K-Drama Review: “Eve” Proves That Revenge Is A Dish Best Served Cold

Featuring a seductive and dark tale, Eve comes with scandalous affairs and lavish gowns paired with ruthless revenge.

The story contrives how vengeance is naturally self-destructing and there’s no other way to be appeased inevitably.

Eve Quick Plot Recap

The story follows the bittersweet life of Lee Ra-el (Seo Yea Ji), who lost her parents at a young age. This destroyed her family. Ra-el spent the following thirteen years plotting her revenge to destroy Kang Yoon-gyeom (Park Byung Eun), his wife Han So-ra (Yoo Sun), and her father Han Pan-ro (Jeon Gook Hwan).

She returns as the beautiful and demure ballet instructor Kim Sun-bin, who appears to be living the perfect life with her husband and adopted daughter. Ra-el works alongside Seo Eun-pyeong (Lee Sang Yeob), the National Assembly’s youngest member who grew up in an orphanage and witnessed her tragic destiny.

As life becomes cruel to her at an early age, she comes back with elaborate schemes to seek revenge on those responsible for ruining her life and making them crumble.

Eve Series Highlights

Morally Grey Characters

Without condoning the characters’ destructive behaviors, Eve demonstrates that no one is entirely good or bad. They all have dysfunctional family backgrounds, which shape their personalities and behaviors. People commit horrible things when motivated by greed or power.

In particular, So Ra’s performance was a realistic representation of a character with serious psychological issues, tormented by the wounds of her past, who just wants to be cared for by her family.

Eve Series Musings

The show’s first half started with great plot development. It comes with appalling affairs, a posh wardrobe, and hostility-driven vengeance entertaining to watch.  The show’s dazzlingly vibrant colors and aesthetically stunning set designs did not disappoint as well.

However, the show became sluggish a few weeks before the season finale. There was no plot development occurring. Moreover, Ra-el’s character went from being a vengeful, powerful woman ready to bring down an empire to falling in love with a guy partially responsible for the death of her loved ones.

In contrast, Seo Ye Ji’s portrayal of her character was spot-on. The actress is naturally beautiful, but her outfits are undeniably remarkable. She is perfect for the starring role since she can captivate and thrill the audience.

Overall, despite its setbacks, Eve is a pleasant watch. While others have mixed reactions to the show’s finale, I quite liked the message it sends. Is it satisfying? Not really. But this simply proves that revenge may be achieved, but you won’t be happy with the outcome.
