K-Drama Review: “Glitch” – A Sci-fi Story That Brings Aliens, Friendship, and Companionship To Life

Mixing sci-fi, psychological issues, mass hysteria, and human relationships; Glitch is a slow-paced series with flaws but with meaningful lessons that make sense.

The 10-episode journey revolves around the protagonist trying to find her ex-boyfriend which results in uncovering disturbing truths. Banal existence, adulthood, life choices, and alien obsession are a hell of the premise for the show.

Glitch Quick Plot Recap

The show starts with a young girl lying alone in a field of reeds startled by a big light above her. Flashbacks from the past are blended into the present-day scenario showcasing the perfect life of Ji-Hyo.

The wealthy loving parents, a good boyfriend, a satisfying job, and friends, she has it all. But what seems heaven-like; if you pull back the curtain a little bit you will realize her life is a mess.

She is stalked and haunted by an alien creature in restaurants and stores. Her electronic devices keep malfunctioning now and then indicating an alien connection specific to her.

Then, an unidentified light causes Ji Hyo’s boyfriend’s disappearance. She traces her boyfriend’s whereabouts with the help of UFO club members where she met her high school best friend.

Bo Ra and Ji Hyo ended their bond on a negative note and are very angry with each other holding different pieces of the puzzle. And that’s where the journey of conspiracies, religion believes, and psychological confusion starts.

The two best friends try to uncover the truth behind these disappearances and cult symbols along with the forgotten memories that hurt both of them badly.

Glitch

“If you witness something so shocking that’s incomprehensible, the human mind covers up that image with a different image, something familiar and digestible.” – Huh Bora

They both try to save people from a psycho pastor who has convinced people of salvation and freedom from their carbon bodies. The people of the cult believe that a messiah will help them get away from their sinful bodies and reach ultimate peace.

But thankfully the story holds the hysteria and logic together till the end and proved to be worth a watch.

It’s an open ending and open to audience interpretation. Is it a mystery, sci-fi, thriller, or comedy for you to judge? This perilous journey has some hilarious one-liners and expressions throughout the show.

Glitch Series Highlights

Strong female leads

Ji Hyo’s character is very strong from the start but didn’t develop much at the end. Her obsession over aliens and UFOs from school is reflected in her journey and problems in life. The expressionless and dull pattern of her living changed when she met her best friend from school. Her energy while trying to divulge the truth is refreshing.

The character of Bo Ra is bold and brazen. She smokes, has lots of tattoos, brave and liberal. Her determination often seems cheeky but vulnerable around her. The bond between the best friends is unique and very lovable. At the end of the show, you sure are to ship them together.

Aliens and conspiracy theories

Aliens have always been a fascinating fiction to portray on the screen with VFX and graphics. And the Alien character with a green baseball hat is endearing.

Correspondingly, aliens seemed to be Ji Hyo’s escape route to life, the story intertwined between cult societies with absolutely crazy theories that left you wondering what is exactly true.

Glitch contemplates religious beliefs and undeniable faith in some big power winning over logic. People were ready to give up their own lives to find light for the ultimate happiness.

It makes you think about the fickleness of the human mind. Religious cults and their way of manipulation around the world have always shown bizarre methods of operations. The show shed light on these unfair practices prominently.

Comic Timing

With all the serious mass suicide and psychological trauma, the series still pulls out perfect comedy scenes effortlessly.

Ji Hyo plays dumb charades in the middle of the mission and Bo Ra’s quick wit makes you laugh and roll.

The UFO members have their own unique dialogue delivery style and their appearance makes it side-splitting.

Glitch Series Musings

An important message about faith, friendship, and mental health is shown with the inclusion of jaw-dropping moments in Glitch. The series manages to showcase the problems of cult culture and the effects of unresolved past issues brilliantly.

The cult made people see UFOs and even convince them to give their lives for selfishness, and even play with their minds and memories. Additionally, the moment of despair and silliness of belief shows the fragile nature of our minds.

So, if you want a break from the regular clichés, romance, and melodramas Glitch is a fresh watch for you. The 10-episode roller coaster ride of hilarious, suspenseful, and keep-you-at-your-edge scenes is a good binge-watch over the weekend. Watch it on Netflix.
