K-Drama Review: “The Glory Part 1” Gratifies With Intoxicating and Ruminative Revenge-Driven Story

The Glory Part 2 Quick Plot Recap

Fulfilling the revenge she planned for a long time, Moon Dong-eun (Song Hye Kyo) faces obstacles to her scheme as her mother reappears again in her life.

Yeo-jeong (Lee Do Hyun) and Hyeon-nam (Yeom Hye Ran), who also experienced the tormenting pain of violence in their life, loyally work for the realization of Dong-eun’s revenge.

While Park Yeon-jin (Lim Ji Yeon) continues to deny the violence she committed in the past, Myeong-o’s disappearance causes a rift in their friend group, which eventually drives them to their own ruin.

The Glory Part 2 Series Highlights

A Cathartic End with Revelations

Concluding its story, the series completes Dong-eun’s revenge while also revealing the full truth about So-hee’s death. Like a well-knitted narrative, viewers get to know the circumstances of So-hee’s death, who was bearing a child at her death.

Granted many times to repent for what they’ve done, perpetrators in the drama face merciless outcomes they’ve driven themselves into. As the stories of the characters are well-connected, especially with Yeon-jin’s friend group, Dong-eun’s tactful push brought out a small fire inside them. This then later turned into collapsing dominoes that made them ruin each other despite being “friends”.

Response to Various Social Issues

Other than school violence, the series also included various social issues in its story. On point with its violent reaction to detestable crimes, the drama efficiently uses irony to deliver its strong message.

A parent or not, violating women and capturing inappropriate photos of children is unforgivable. Jae-jun, who violated women including So-hee, should realize this after attacking Ye-sol’s teacher.

Moreover, the series serves as an eye-opener to the irony in authorities and religious leaders who promote society’s welfare. They actively call people to walk towards the good, but they themselves also engage in corruption and the exchange of illicit favors.

Finding Light After a Dark Journey

Dong-eun’s perpetrators fell to their own ruin the moment they chose to be her bullies and show no remorse even years after. Fulfilling her goals, Dong-eun maintains her own dignity as an adult after apologizing to Ye-sol even though the child doesn’t fully grasp the situation.

Likewise, a good ending also finds Hyeon-nam and Gyeong-ran, who become free from the violence they experienced. Unknowingly benefitted mutually from them and her landlord, Dong-eun realizes the good in her life despite all the bad that has happened.

The Glory Part 2 Series Musings

From its first part to the end, all characters were solidly portrayed. Nobody lacked in bringing their characters to life, especially Kim Hieora and Cha Joo Young. Lim Ji Yeon as a villain would surely be memorable for how she expressed Yeon-jin’s smirk.

As the first part focused on building tension in the story, the second part successfully brought out the revenge Dong-eun envisioned. It was surely satisfying, not in a way that needed Yeon-jin and other perpetrators to burn, but in a fitting way that translated to them the pain their victims felt.

It’s great that Dong-eun found people who cheered for her, such as Yeo-jeong. However, their romance could have been better off being platonic like friends who supported each other. Nevertheless, the drama still bore a remarkable story and striking message about various types of violence.

Mistakes and evildoings cannot be erased, even in a parent-and-child relationship. Adults hold a lot of responsibility for how the next generations are formed, and we witness how adults and corrupted parents contribute to the cycle of violence in Dong-eun’s youth.

To a certain degree, the adults during Dong-eun’s youth are at fault for ignoring injustices and enabling children who disrespect others’ dignity. Knowing better, Dong-eun chooses another route that doesn’t necessitate corrupting the next generation.

A Call Out to Society

Embellished with a wonderful cast and invigorating story, the drama’s artistic value is top-notch. As this is fiction, most of the characters dipped into illegalities to reach their goals even though they are not villains. Like a visualization of the perfect revenge, merciless acts shouldn’t be imitated in the real world.

Rather than ending on a fiery note, the drama concludes itself with an inspiring direction, having Dong-eun learn about her landlord’s story. Sometimes, forgiveness isn’t always the answer. Instead, it’s realizing all the good one has, to keep one going.
