Here’s a day tour featuring Suwon for people who like history and quaint neighborhoods!

Outside Seoul, Suwon houses a few notable historic sites. Recently, a neighborhood of cafes and restaurants has also garnered interest as a popular K-Drama filming location.

You would not want to miss a visit to UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, Hwaseong Fortress.

According to Visit Korea, the fortress, constructed from 1794 to 1796, was built by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty to house and honor the remains of his father Prince Sado, who had been executed by being locked alive inside a rice chest by his own father King Yeongjo after failing to obey the command to commit suicide.  Hence it is also called the walled city of filial love.

It also demonstrates King Jeongjo’s goal to establish a new pioneer city with its own economic power.

Twenty Five Twenty One, Itaewon Class and Love in the Moonlight are some of fan-favorite K-Dramas filmed at this fortress.

Near Hwaseong Fortress is Hwaseong Haenggung Palace. In Joseon era, “haenggung” is a temporary palace where the king and royal family retreated during a war.

Popular Korean dramas filmed at this palace include Moon Embracing The Sun, Rooptop Prince, Deep Rooted Tree, The Princess Man, Queen and I and more.

Suwon’s Haenggung-dong

Suwon is a mesmerizing city where historical-cultural heritage balances with contemporary culture. Within a few walks from the past, you get to experience the thriving vibe of the present at Haenggung-dong.

Hanok-themed cafes decorate the neighborhood aligning with the historical significance of the area. You can also snap pretty photos by visiting the mural village in the vicinity.

Notably, some of this year’s well-loved Korean dramas are shot at locations in Haenggung-dong: Haenggung Party which is Choi Woong’s house in Our Beloved Summer; Kajaguruma aka Young-woo’s father’s kimbap restaurant in Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Cafe Booter as the building owned by Lee Seung Gi in The Law Cafe.

Make sure to add Suwon to your Korea travel bucket list and enjoy the best of Korean culture and modern restaurant-cafes!
