Korean Film “Broker” Notches Cannes Film Festival Nomination

Powered by South Korea’s renowned stars, Broker was officially invited to the competition section of the 75th Cannes International Film Festival.

Directed by acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, the film features a solid cast roster including Song Kang Ho, Kang Dong Won, Bae Doona, Lee Ji Eun and Lee Joo Young.

Broker traverses the story of an unexpected and special journey of people who get entangled because of baby boxes.

These baby boxes provide hope for infants to receive care from others after they got dropped on the boxes.

In the film, a broker and a detective set out on a journey with different goals.

They find the new parents for the babies the detectives who follow their journey to finish a long and painstaking case.

Correspondingly, Director Hirokazu adds another milestone to his career by entering Cannes for the 8th time. His work for the 2018 film Shoplifters won the Palme d’Or in the festival.

Broker is also the first South Korean film he directed where he worked with the Korean cast and crew.

The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will run from May 17 to May 28.

A Happy Cast and Director Looking Forward To The Film Festival

Following the invitation announcement, Director Hirokazu and the lead actors express their thoughts on entering the competition.

Director Hirokazu Koreeda said, “I am glad that this work, which transcends different languages ​​and cultural differences, has been highly evaluated. With this invitation, not only me but also all the staff and actors who participated in the work have been rewarded.”

Lauded actor Song Kang Ho also returns to the Cannes stage for the fourth time. Thus making history for the most number of invitations given to a South Korean actor.

In addition, the seasoned actor was the first Korean male actor to be appointed to the Cannes jury last year.

“It’s always exciting and fun to be with the Cannes Film Festival. I am honored and grateful to be able to share this good news.”

Similarly, Kang Dong Won, who was invited to Cannes for the second time following Peninsula in 2020 looks forward to sharing a profound film with the audience.

“It is meaningful and I’m grateful to hear this good news as it is a film that everyone filmed with all their heart.”

Happy and honored to work with Director Hirokazu, Bae Doona takes pride in the reunion film with the celebrated director.

“It’s a special movie for me just to be working with Director Hirokazu Koreeda for the first time in 12 years after Air Doll.”

Accordingly, Lee Ji Eun (IU), who entered the Cannes International Film Festival for the first time through Broker also conveyed excitement.

“I was grateful that I learned a lot throughout the spring of last year while filming Broker. And I remember that all the experiences were purposeful. To be able to attend, this spring seems to be as significant as last year’s filming. So I’m excited and looking forward to it once again.”

Lastly, Lee Joo Young relayed feeling energized by the good news.

“About this time last year, I was filming Broker in various parts of the country, and as spring comes again, I am thrilled to hear this good news.”

In celebration of the invitation, a poster was unveiled today for Broker in the competition section of the 75th Cannes International Film Festival.
