Netflix has announced the production of a new film titled Good News (WT), directed by Byun Sung-hyun.

Set in the turbulent 1970s, the film explores a high-stakes, mysterious operation, where a determined group embarks on a mission to force the landing of a hijacked airplane—no matter the cost. With intrigue, action, and suspense, Good News (WT) promises a gripping narrative that blends historical tension with the pulse-pounding drama of an audacious operation.

This film marks Byun Sung-hyun’s second collaboration with Netflix, following the success of Kill Boksoon, which premiered in the Berlinale Special section of the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival. Known for his masterful storytelling and genre-blending style, Byun has crafted yet another intense, unpredictable story that keeps audiences on edge. His ability to dive into complex human relationships and high-pressure scenarios will once again be on display in Good News (WT).

The film features a stellar cast of both seasoned and up-and-coming actors. Sul Kyung Gu, a highly respected actor known for his versatile roles in films like The Whirlwind, reunites with Byun Sung-hyun for their fourth collaboration. Having previously worked together on The Merciless, Kingmaker, and Kill Boksoon, Sul takes on a new challenge in Good News, portraying a mysterious fixer—a man who appears when solutions are desperately needed and resolves problems through unconventional means. His transformation into this enigmatic figure is expected to bring a new layer of depth to the film’s tension-filled storyline.

Rising star Hong Kyung, known for his roles in Weak Hero Class 1, Revenant, and Troll Factory, steps into the role of an Air Force lieutenant who becomes entangled in the secretive operation. Bringing a blend of intensity and subtlety to the character, Hong Kyung is set to showcase a different side of his acting talent, surprising audiences with his performance in this thriller. His presence in the film adds an exciting, fresh dynamic to the cast, marking him as a rising force in the Korean film industry.

Also joining the ensemble is Ryu Seung Bum, a veteran actor known for his memorable roles in Moving and The Berlin File. In Good News (WT), Ryoo plays a high-ranking government official responsible for overseeing the entire covert operation. With his signature charisma and deep, realistic portrayals, Ryoo’s character adds further tension and authority to the plot. His dynamic presence is expected to complement the performances of Sul Kyung Gu and Hong Kyung, creating an explosive synergy that will elevate the film’s dramatic stakes.

The combination of these three powerful actors—Sul Kyung Gu, Hong Kyung, and Ryoo Seung Bum—brings together both the seasoned experience of established stars and the fresh energy of new talent, promising an extraordinary level of acting chemistry. The dynamic interplay between these actors is set to add layers of emotional complexity and intensity to the film, making it one of the most anticipated releases in Korean cinema.

Director Byun Sung-hyun has already made a name for himself with films that delve into intricate character relationships and high-stakes scenarios. His earlier works, such as The Merciless (2017), which premiered in the Midnight Screenings section at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, received critical acclaim for their intense storytelling and psychological depth. Byun further solidified his reputation with Kingmaker (2022), a film that earned him Best Director honors at both the Baeksang Arts Awards and the Grand Bell Awards. Kingmaker was praised as one of the “most sophisticated political noirs” of its time, showcasing Byun’s talent for navigating complex narratives with emotional richness.

With Good News, Byun Sung-hyun embarks on a new artistic challenge. The film promises to be another compelling exploration of human conflict, filled with unpredictable twists and captivating character dynamics. The storyline, which blends political intrigue, personal ambition, and moral dilemmas, will undoubtedly keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The constant conflict between characters and the tension of the hijacking operation is set to create an emotionally charged atmosphere throughout the film.

Scheduled for release on Netflix, Good News  is expected to captivate global audiences with its intense drama, rich storytelling, and remarkable performances.
