Breaking stereotypes, the cast of Woori The Virgin bravely shares in a media conference what makes the series different from other dramas.
Based on the acclaimed American series Jane The Virgin, SBS proudly presents another rom-com series, Woori The Virgin. The recent press conference was attended by Director Jung Jung Hwa, Im Soo Hyang, Sung Hoon, Hong Ji Yoon, and Shin Dong Wook.
Woori The Virgin tells the story of Oh Woo Ri (Im Soo Hyang), who wants to remain chaste until marriage. She then accidentally had a child with Raphael (Sung Hoon).
A tangled romance happens when Raphael’s wife Lee Ma Ri (Hong Ji Yoon), and Lee Kang Jae (Shin Dong Wook), who has feelings for Woo Ri, get involved.
Director Jung Jung Hwa’s Groundbreaking Work
Slated to premiere this May 9, the director of Woori The Virgin proudly communicates his creative process for the series.
“The drama is stimulating that cannot be compared to the last dramas in Korea. We directed it so that Korean viewers can enjoy it according to Korean sentiment. Rather than provocative elements, the process of the characters in absurd situations has family love in it, is the point of view of the Korean version.”
Furthermore, Director Jung reveals how he picked the perfect actors who will naturally portray the characters. He shared,
“I didn’t have to match the actor’s casting to the original image by changing the script to Korean. As soon as I wrote the script, I first gave it to Im Soo Hyang and Sung Hoon, and accepted it. In the case of actor Shin Dong Wook, we met in person and changed the nature of Lee Kang Jae’s character. Hong Ji Yoon is the person who best fits the original image. She is a cute and gentle-looking villain.”
Reunited Like An Old Couple
After receiving a casting from Director Jung, Im Soo Hyang shares her thoughts after reading the script.
“‘Can such materials be found in Korea?’ This was my first thought when I first saw the script. As I read the script, I wondered about her future and it made me want to see the script for the next episodes.”
On the other hand, Sung Hoon expresses his feeling of ease knowing he will be working again with Director Jung.
“Before I saw the script, I did it right away because Director Jung gave me a proposal. I had faith because I had already worked together with The Sound of the Heart Reboot 2.”
Furthermore, Im Soo Hyang and Sung Hoon who have worked together have no problem being comfortable in intense scenes. Soo Hyang stated,
“We practiced acting together, so I consistently cheered him. So I felt reassured. I feel like an old couple with him.” Sung Hoon said, “I am grateful to SBS officials for joining and organizing with Im Soo Hyang. We’ve been in constant contact for 10 years, so we didn’t have to work together in acting.”
Secondary Leads Love Their Characters
Moreover, Hong Ji Yoon describes what the series means to her.
“It was a rich, touching script. It was the most interesting script I’ve seen in recent years to the extent that I even thought I needed a doping test for the coach. It was also a work with a sense of theme that should be considered socially. It was so charming that I really wanted to do it. The story is rich and three-dimensional. It is an honor. ‘It’s a gift-like piece’.”
Lastly, Shin Dong Wook reveals his preparation for his character.
“I had to express my mixed personality as a detective and loving character. I was able to immerse myself when I saw Im Soo Hyang on the spot. He (Lee Kang Jae) has a lovely personality.
At the conclusion of their press conference, Director Jung reveals the challenges he faces as Woori The Virgin premieres.
“From the creator’s point of view, it hurts if there are flaws in issues other than the work. We also have a heavy heart to hear that other dramas have also suffered from mental hardships. Actor Lim Soo Hyang will also appear as a judge on other channels’ weekends. I don’t know how viewers will react. However, the acting ability of actor Lim Soo Hyang is guaranteed. I think the public will respond favorably to the performance.”
