iQIYI’s modern romance short series My Lovely Wife premiered on 11 October, with the full series uploaded on its day of premiere for members to view.
Despite two weeks since it has aired, the series is still high on the popularity charts, placing top three internationally. In the span of 22 episodes, My Lovely Wife (站住！小哑妻) tells the story of a couple from contract marriage to co-habitance and then falling for each other. Although the plot may seem cliche, its fast pace has kept its audience on their toes before the series ended on a happy note.
Co-starred by young budding actors Pein (李沛恩) and Zheng Nanxi (郑楠汐), this series is filled with plot twists, from almost being tricked into getting assaulted to signing a proposal contract with no prior foundation of a romantic relationship to thinking that they were step-sibilings, and finally clearing up the misunderstanding. Many have expressed their enjoyment of the light-hearted series alongside their everyday life.
Both the co-stars may look really young but they both have wowed the crowd with their superb acting skills Zheng Nanxi even took a big leap of faith to take on a non-speaking role as her character has gone mute due to PTSD.
As a familiar face in the realm of romance dramas, Zheng Nanxi has acted in multiple romance series since two years ago. With her sweet appearance and acting skills, she has starred in series including Honey Don’t Run Away 2 (公子，我娶定你了2), My Poison Lover (霜落又识君), and Call Me By Ur Girl (请叫我乌雅氏). This time she takes on a challenging role, relying on her acting alone to pull off a non-speaking role in the first half of the series, presenting a stellar performance as a mute wife.
The energetic and youthful male lead, Pein, on the other hand, has acted in multiple popular dramas and movies including the movie The Bravest (烈火英雄) which was trending worldwide. His performance as a firefighter who sacrificed himself in an accident touched many hearts and he gained much popularity ever since. In recent years, he has also starred in Till the End of the Moon (长月烬明), which also starred popular actors Leo Luo (罗云熙) and Bai Lu (白鹿). Despite this being his first-ever male lead series, Pein’s performance in My Lovely Wife isn’t one to be underestimated as he played out the perfect CEO character of our dreams.
Not forgetting the stellar production team that made the series one to catch–Wang Meng, one of the producers for the show, is an ex-TVB director and producer, having produced many classics including Journey to the West 2 (西游记2), Sword and Fairy 1 (仙剑奇侠传1), Strange Tales of Liao Zhai (聊斋), and many more.
My Lovely Wife tells the story of Xu Nian (starring Zheng Nanxi) who suffers from PTSD after witnessing her mother’s death. She not only lost a motherly figure but also had to live with her father who brought home his lover together with a step-sister who is of similar age to her.
Since then, she had to endure her father’s cold treatment while often being bullied by her stepmother, Jiang Wanli (starring Wang Lei 王蕾) and stepsister Xu Yao (starring Hu Yaqi 胡雅绮). As she felt that there was a secret behind her mother’s death, she forced herself to appear innocent and mute when, in fact, she is someone with an extremely high IQ.
The cold and arrogant CEO Gu Mingyan (starring Pein) is known for his ruthless actions. Due to his childhood trauma, he develops paranoid Schizophrenia and is extremely guarded from everyone. He has always suspected that his father’s death was a scheme by the Xu Family and Gu Hongyu (starring Martin Zhang 张皓承).
After he knew of Xu Nian’s identity, he attempted to make use of her to uncover the truth and used a wedding proposal contract as a trap before moving in together. Little did he know that he had also fallen into the trap set by Xu Nian. As the two highly intelligent individuals attempt to outsmart each other, they eventually fall for each other in this “game” of theirs.
