PRESS CONFERENCE: “The Trauma Code: Heroes On Call” Promises A Thrilling Blend of Heroism, Fantasy, and Medical Drama

The much-anticipated Netflix series The Trauma Code: Heroes On Call is set to debut globally on January 24th, offering a fresh and exhilarating twist on the medical drama genre.

Starring Ju Ji Hoon in the lead role and directed by Lee Do-yoon, the series promises a mix of action, fantasy, and heartfelt storytelling that aims to captivate viewers during the Lunar New Year holiday.

At a press conference held on the 21st at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas, the cast and creators of The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call shared insights into the making of this unique drama. Alongside Ju Ji Hoon, actors Choo Young Woo, Ha Young, Yoon Kyung Ho, and Jung Jae Kwang joined director Lee Do-yoon to discuss the show’s themes, characters, and production challenges.

The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call revolves around Baek Kang-hyeok (Joo Ji-hoon), a genius surgeon with a fearless and unyielding spirit who has honed his skills on battlefields. Tasked with reviving an ineffective trauma team, Kang-hyeok finds himself navigating an uphill battle to save lives in a flawed system. Adapted from a popular webtoon, the story brings its unique blend of fantasy and realism to life, exploring themes of justice, heroism, and resilience.

Director Lee Do-yoon revealed that Joo Ji-hoon was instrumental in bringing the project to life. “When Joo Ji-hoon first approached me about this work, I was intrigued by how well he fit the character. At first, I thought Baek Kang-hyeok and Ji-hoon were different, but I soon realized they share a determination and charisma that would make the character shine.

Ju Ji Hoon described Trauma Code as a story that balances fantastical elements with grounded realities. “The series portrays the challenges and injustices we face in real life but overcomes them in ways we wish were possible. It’s exhilarating and uplifting while addressing serious themes, such as saving lives.” He added that transitioning the story from webtoon to live-action required careful consideration to maintain believability while embracing its imaginative roots.

Baek Kang-hyeok’s character is a complex mix of extraordinary skill and a relentless sense of justice, shaped by his experiences on and off the battlefield. Ju Ji-hoon shared that playing such a dynamic character was both challenging and rewarding. “I wanted to present Kang-hyeok as refreshing and inspiring, but still relatable, without making him seem unrealistic.

Director Lee emphasized that while the show is labeled a medical drama, it deviates from the genre’s conventions. “It’s more of a heroic epic, focusing on characters who do what must be done in extraordinary circumstances. It combines action, comedy, and thriller elements, creating a genre-blending narrative.

One of the most visually striking aspects of the series is the use of a real helicopter as a central element in the storyline. The production team acquired a scrapped rescue helicopter, creatively repurposing it for filming. “The helicopter isn’t just a prop; it symbolizes the urgency and determination required to save lives,” the director explained.

The cast also praised the production quality and immersive environment. Choo Young Woo, in his first major project, expressed gratitude for the support he received. “The detailed sets and advanced technology made it easy to believe in the world we were creating,” he said. Yoon Kyung-ho added humorously, “Seeing a helicopter on a rooftop was a reminder of Netflix’s impressive resources.

Acknowledging the ongoing real-world medical crises, the creators clarified that The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call takes a more fantastical approach, set in a future where severe trauma centers are fully operational. “This isn’t a reflection of present realities but a story that blends imagination with elements of medical authenticity,” the director noted.

To ensure accuracy in medical scenes, the production consulted trauma surgeons and medical professionals. While some scenarios stretch the boundaries of reality, the team worked hard to present them in a way that felt credible. “Our advisor told us that in life-or-death situations, anything can happen, and Kang-hyeok’s bold decisions are rooted in this truth,” the director said.

With its unique mix of heroism, fantasy, and thrilling action, Trauma Center is poised to redefine the medical drama genre. The series explores the triumph of determination and justice in the face of impossible odds, led by Joo Ji-hoon’s compelling performance and a strong supporting cast.

The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call premieres on Netflix worldwide on January 24th, promising an unforgettable journey that will inspire, thrill, and move audiences.
