Out of the Dream Quick Plot Recap (Spoilers Alert!)
Yu-Fei (Chen Yu Si) passionately works as a Peking opera performer. Even though she is still a student she has great regard for the traditional culture of Peking opera. Yu-Fei also sets her mind towards her dreams and would do everything she can to achieve this.
However, Yu-Fei got expelled by her teacher because of a mistake that she did during a performance. Yu-Fei got frustrated and went to a bar to drink. Not knowing what she is doing, Yu-Fei started to sing and caught Guan-Jiu’s attention.
She was so impressed and immediately called her boss, Bai Fei-Li, founder of Juibai Stage Play Studio. Fei-Li got the looks with her long hair that would make you fall in love at first sight. Despite his beautiful physique, he carries a burden from his past that makes him work hard on stage.
Even though Fe-Lei had a hard time convincing Yu-Fei to work on his new play, she eventually accepted Fe-Lei’s offer. Yu-Fei’s bright voice lightened up the stage play of Fe-Lei and got recognized by many people because of Yu-Fei’s passionate performance.
Later on, the two got separated because of the death of Yu-Fei’s mother. After some time, they met again with Yu-Fei finishing her course in professional drama school. Meanwhile, Fe-Lei has a hard time in his drama club.
Together they help each other but Yu-Fei was recognized by Fe-Lei’s grandparents and thought that they are a perfect fit for each other. While resolving their conflicts, Yu-Fei and Fe-Lei opened their hearts for each other and ended entering the marriage hall, hand in hand.
Out of the Dream Peak Points (Spoilers Alert!)
A Space for Culture
One of the peak points of Out of the Dream is that it goes out with the usual genres of dramas. It’s rare to see a drama that gives space in promoting its countries culture, especially the Peking opera.
More than the romance and how the characters handled their conflicts, the drama gave a balanced tone on what it wanted to give to its audience. Chen Yu Si did a really good job portraying as a Peking opera performer and how she sings her heart out radiates warmth to her audience.
Out of the Dream also opened the life of theater performers and how hard it is to prepare in a simple play. Many people are still downgrading plays and artists but this drama boost that theater actors can also be equated with film actors, in terms of the hard work and preparations.
Music Speaks When We Can’t
If you want to discover new genre songs, Out of the Dream offers a new kind of music to your ears. The character of Yun-Fei was seen doing an excellent job in singing that makes her audience appreciate each lyric of the song when performing a Peking opera.
The passion of Yun-Fei for music goes beyond words because in the drama she proved that music became her mouth when it’s too hard to blurt words because of the messy things around her.
Fe-Lei also respected Yun-Fei’s love for opera because he broke up with Yun-Fei so that she can concentrate on performing. However, this doesn’t last long because they wanted to help each other as much as they can.
Yun-Fei was able to perform and sing on the stage of “The Prosperity of Spring and Autumn.” Meanwhile, Fe-Lei continued producing new dramas. As a couple, performing and music is also the sole reason why they met in the first place.
Out of the Dream Series Musings
Out of the Dream was the first musical Chinese drama that I’ve watched. What caught my attention is that it’s my first time to see and witness a Peking opera.
I love how the drama used the platform to promote this kind of opera because nowadays modern music is what people love and traditional performances are being buried.
I also commend Yao Chi and Chen Yu Si for giving their best in dressing characters who are hooked up in theater performances. They also made a very good couple that makes music as their center.
However, there are just some scenes that I find unnecessary and exaggerated. There are also many family conflicts, which I personally don’t like because of how taxing it can be for viewers.
On a lighter note, I must say that Out of the Dream gave a unique feeling to me and made me realize that we should all have a safe space. Somewhere we can freely release our negative thoughts and emotions. There’s nothing more satisfying when we have our very own havens.
