Unrequited Love Episodes 17 – 20 Key Moments

“I know that I should give up on you.”

Armed with a piece of old news linking Huainan and Luo Zhi’s ill fate, Zhanyan drops a bomb that he won’t be able to disregard. Noticing he does not care about the trivial “memory box” she asked Luo Zhi to return, she presents her trump card.

Unfortunately, it gets through Huainan. He learns how Luo Zhi’s father died in a bicycle factory accident owned by his father before. When he met with his mom he confirms the news and even heard how Luo Zhi was brought by her mom to their home for help. His parents refused to help because it will validate that it was the company’s fault, and it was stirring public sentiment.

Learning about the hardship Luo Zhi had to go through, Huainan surmises how her tough facade sprang from a painful past.

Back at the dorm, Luo Zhi stares at the books Huainan gifted him and is still yet to receive a reply from him. While she wonders why he went off-grid, Huainan contemplates on their connection that seems impossible to pursue.

“Again Sheng Huainan disappeared in my world. This always happened. It’s very easy for him to get close to me. Yet it’s very hard for me to catch up to him.”

Luo Zhi learns from Mingrui that Huainan has fallen ill so her mood lighten up a bit. She has been worried that Huainan has uncovered her secret long-running crush to him.

“Do you think love is like an equation?”

Keeping himself busy fixing things, Huainan ponders why Luo Zhi never mentioned the thing about her father. He can’t escape at the thought of her probable intentional plan to get closer to him for revenge. Also, he wonders if she felt he is not worthy enough to know her deepest secret.

When Mingrui arrived to check on him, he tells Huainan that Luo Zhi has been worried about him. He responds how his mind is messed up when he never experienced it before.

Telling his overanalayzing friend that love needs not to be contemplated seriously, Mingrui advises him of how love puts two people together to be happy. But Huainan thinks he is on a one-sided love affair and is sad how little he knows about her.

Seeing his friend’s point, Mingrui thankfully leaves an all-important advice to him.

“But don’t always disappear after flirting with her.”

Voicing out how he seems to be playing hard-to-get, Huainan flares up how he has never felt wanting to know someone since Luo Zhi and questions why he always need to feel sorry and apologize.

“Please don’t tell him that it came from me.”

Distracted from learning about Huainan’s sickness, Luo Zhi goes to buy some porridge for him. However, she fell and spilled the porridge takeout. From afar, Huainan saw her fall and follows her. She goes back to the restaurant to buy another set to give to Huainan.

Lei Tian got the porridge and was surprised when Huainan emerged just when Luo Zhi left. At their dorm room, he tells Huainan to appreciate the effort of Luo Zhi especially since he saw her effort in getting the porridge for him. In tears, Huainan ate the porridge.

The next day, Luo Zhi finally sees Huainan with Mingrui at their class, but he opted to sit at a different spot. When he got a scratch because fangirl Wenrui got ecstatic when he handed out her pen, Luo ZHi hurriedly passed on an adhesive bandage for him.

“I’m okay. I expected too much of him.”

Mingrui cushions Luo ZHi’s disappointment by saying Huainan does not want to pass on his virus to her so he opted to sit differently. But Luo Zhi shrugs his words blaming herself for expecting too much.

After class, Huainan sets off without waiting for Mingrui and Luo Zhi. When he sees Zhanyan asking to discuss their hosting stint for a novelist symposium he goes with her, but stole glances on Luo Zhi who walked away. Finding solace at her favorite school spot, Luo Zhi sends a spree message to Huainan to make sure that he will not overlook the message notifications.

Feeling dejected she mumbles how he lied about saying he is not ordinary and can do almost anything when he can’t even notice the implied meaning of her messages.

She stares at her wall love confession and embrace herself as she cries in agony.

“Now I understand that when you care about someone. It’s useless to put up a pretense. I once looked down on some emotions. Now each of them are freely going through my mind.”

“My mind doesn’t stop for anyone. Instead my heart always beats for someone.”

Luo Zhi’s sad reverie was interrupted by Gebi’s call who asked for her help to suggest ideas for Mo Dan’s symposium since she is a loyal fan of the novelist. Zhanyan’s usual unreasonable plucky self is quick to converse with contempt to Luo Zhi’s thoughts.

Raising a passage from Mo Dan’s book that they want to inquire about, Huainan recites the line that totally defines what Luo Zhi feels for him, which he does not know about.

He mentions the plan to discuss the impactful lines from the famous novelist’ works. They arrive at a conclusion that does not support Luo Zhi’s idea but Gebi pleads for her to still read through the script to suggest input.

“It’s raining hard. Do you want me to pick you up?”

Finally getting a message from Huainan, she goes to meet him but gets another emotional blow. The meeting was orchestrated by Zhanyan for Huainan to validate Luo Zhi’s ulterior motive. That she has intentionally arranged for coincidences to get closer to him.

Thinking they will get back on track, Luo Zhi creates a setting for them but it unfortunately backfired because when Huainan asked where she is, she replied differently. Huainan bumping on Mingrui learned already that she is at the dorm but her response was at a cafe. It further hyped Huainan’s doubt.

“So you came here today to test me, right?” Did you find out all my secrets? You came to pick me up with your ex-girlfriend’s raincoat. What do you want to know? Do you know that I spent 15 years observing you and secretly loving you and that’s why in the shortest period of time I was able to show you how much we have in common to make you thing that we were in sync? Is that it?”

Huainan hands the raincoat which breaks Luo Zhi’s heart. They part ways as Luo Zhi grieves inwardly. She goes to where she wrote her love confession and weeps while she desperately erases it. Back at their door, Huainan is also emotionally overwhelmed and tells Mingrui how he hates himself and breaks into tears.

“Since high school, whenever I passed by a basketball court, I’d search for him without realizing it.”

Both nursing their broken hearts, thankfully Huainan and Luo Zhi have loyal dorm friends to rely on. The day after, no traces of pain reflects on Luo Zhi’s face. She devotes herself to studying. Passing on a basketball court, she tells Baili how it has become a habit of her to look for him whenever she sees a basketball court. Unknown to her, Huainan is resting nearby and contemplates on how he’s going to fix their connection back.

Through Huainan’s request, Mingrui lined up to buy Luo Zhi’s favorite pancake and gave an idea to walk the dogs with her. He also brings her to do an experiment at the laboratory, but when she saw Huainan, she excused herself and leaves.

Meanwhile, Baili proceeds to her idea of moving on from Ge Bi. But she is keen to look dazzling at an upcoming alumni event. Officially dating the girl of his dreams, Ge Bi goes for a date with Mohan, but his focus was elsewhere remembering his date with Baili.

“This game has become boring.”

Zhanyan tells Huijing about the trouble she caused Luo Zhi but wonders why Huainan is still distant with her. Voicing out her opinion, Shuijing tells Zhanyan that playing pranks is no longer good at their age like how they did it in high school.

Insisting Luo Zhi is a scheming woman in front of Huainan, Shuijing bravely tells her friend to look at her reflection.

Unrequited Love Episodes 17 – 20 Musings

When the drama you are watching is subconsciously becoming your problem, it translates to the ability of the story to engage. Luo Zhi being ghosted by her almost life-long unrequited love is agony personified.

With Huainan’s turmoil coming from feeling betrayed and Luo Zhi unable to explain the coincidences she created out of her devotion to him for 15 years; our love pairing is on an impasse an hopefully the misunderstandings won’t linger.

The scope of the character introductions have reached a point where we are all familiar to the main and supporting characters. All of them have their own stories to tell which makes a good filler to the series.

Whenever the drama between Luo Zhi and Huainan goes full throttle, their stories make up a good resting point to not saturate our frail hearts which only want a happy ending.

Compared to all the university-set dramas I saw in the past, I like the genuine showing of real college life in Unrequited Love. Having a female lead with quaint attitude makes the narrative all the more endearing.

For a series running over 40 minutes, the engrossing flow deserves applause. Also, the beautiful lines, which initially drew me to the story, are progressing to even more eloquence.

Mid-way to the series, I can definitely vouch that this is one youth romance drama that you should watch this season.
