A dazzling youth series in the backdrop of a university cheering squad is slated to premiere on SBS!
Cheer Up threads on the story of young people who assemble in the cheering squad with a brilliant history that is on the brink of disbandment. Against the backdrop of the 50-year-old college cheering squad of Yeonhee University, it foretells stories of young love and chasing dreams.
Additionally, the series is a collaboration between director Han Tae-seop, who co-directed Stove League, and writer Cha Hae-won, who wrote VIP. To headline the series are actors Han Ji Hyun, Bae In Hyuk, Jang Gyu Ri, Lee Eun Sam and Yang Dong Geun.
Ahead of the premiere on October 3, the lead stars and director acquaint viewers through the drama presentation held earlier.
Providing an overview of what to expect in Cheer Up, Director Han emphasized the drama aims to present the brilliant moments of the 20s, of the lives of college students running towards a goal. In particular, he also paid attention to capturing the emotions of cheerleaders.
Taking pride in capturing the unique charm of the story, the director relayed his meticulous preparations to present the choreography, continuity and song expressions. He also praised the actors for immersing well in their roles and story.
Lead Cast Preparations
Powered by talented rising actors, Cheer Up also previews heart-fluttering romance stories to emerge.
Describing her latest work, Han Ji Hyun shared that her character Do Hae-yi is a bright, optimistic, and hard-working person. Coming from an intense role in SBS hit series, The Penthouse, the actress pointed out the distinct difference between her latest role as she portrays a cheerful character.
Recounting her preparations, Han adorably quipped how hard it was to use the muscles that she did not usually use.
“I’ve been practicing dancing since February, and the teacher and the actual cheering squad taught me the moves. At first, it was physically hard. Nevertheless. it was an exhilarating experience because the choreography and the songs felt just so right.”
Bae In Hyuk takes on the role of Park Jung-woo, the leader of Theia, Yeonhee University’s cheering squad. Expressing how proud he is of Cheer Up, he mentioned how it felt like they were really in a cheering group while filming.
Mirroring the same diligence of the female lead in preparing for his role, Bae confidently declared he put up a solid performance.
“I practiced so much that I thought whether I was acting for dancing or dancing to act. Because of that kind of practice, I was able to show a solid image while filming the drama.”
Next, Kim Hyun Jin who plays Jin Seon-ho, also a new member of Theia details how his character has never had a proper relationship before meeting Hae-yi. He adds that he shares a lot of similarities with Seon-ho, so he prepared hard and auditioned to bring out his colors.
Communicating her interesting character, Jang Gyu Ri imparts Tae Choo-hee has a cool and unstoppable personality befitting to be labeled as “girl crush”. “It felt fresh and special to deal with the story of the cheering squad. I thought I could freely show the acting that I had not been able to show until now,” the former fromis9 member said.
Modestly sharing her preparations, Jang conveyed paying attention to strength training to improve her stamina since she is already skilled in dancing.
A Gleeful Story of Being Young
Revealing the cast synergy to be 100%, Han Ji Hyun mentioned the superb spontaneous adlibs can attest to it. Agreeing with that, Bae In Hyuk also affirmed how he sometimes can’t keep up with the energy of his co-stars.
Also drawing attention is the involvement of Peppertone’s Shin Jae Pyung as music director. Consequently, expect the emotions of college life as cheerful, refreshing and exciting will be conveyed through featured tunes.
Eloquently leaving warm words about the series, Director Han speaks about what he learned while filming the story.
“It is the sincere energy of one’s heart. I think the act of cheering for someone should be limitless, rare, and treasure-like.”
Reaffirming the director’s words, Yang Dong Geun who also graced the event, promised that Cheer Up will gift encouragement to viewers.
Han Ji Hyun hopes that viewers can reminisce about the romance and passion of their 20s. Lastly, Ba In Hyuk pledges meaningful lessons to be highlighted in the series.
