Confessing he initially refused taking the role because of its complexity, he revealed thinking the role was too big for him. He thinks that if the story is made well, it will definitely be a box office hit. Along with that, he believes the story of Seobok has such compelling power that would make viewers contemplate about the meaning of life.

Scoring breakthrough films such as The Crucible, Train to Busan and Kim Ji Young: Born 1982, he emphasized that “something new” is not a criterion on how he selects project. He asserts being drawn to stories that make him think.

On Seobok + His 20-Year Career

For Seobok, he shares its novelty is how it has been pictured before, but not properly done in the Korean commercial film scene. Giving a glimpse of his character, he shared Ki-heon, with harsh and easily agitated attitude, stands in stark contrast with the gentle nature of Seobok. He also prepared immensely for his role and went on a diet for four month that a scene of him eating ramyun in the film was shot to perfection.

Challenging a rough character who throws harsh swear words are completely different from the friendly and gentle characters shown by Gong Yoo before.

In Seobok, a special bromance is expected to unfold. Gong Yoo hopes to give a memorable movie as it is the first time he’s done a project with a junior male actor. Attesting to Park Bo Gum’s well-known good personality, he was able to connect with him like he was seeing himself. He also hints on the amazing work the junior actor did for his role.

2021 is a career milestone for Gong Yoo, having achieved two decades of working as an actor since School 4. The actor admits not counting years but his fans remind him of it.

Leaving a meaningful message, Gong Yoo expressed a living mantra worth noting.

“I live with gratitude every day. I don’t seem to look back on the past. Now that the situation is like this, I feel that day by day is precious. I try to do my best without regrets.”
