INTERVIEW: Chae Bin Makes Her Debut On Stage With The Thriller Play “Really Bad Girl”

Chae Bin shifts her image from a young and cheerful character to a high school student plotting vengeance.

Actress Chae Bin will show a powerful presence in the premiere of Really Bad Girl.

In 2002, at the age of five, she debuted in the film “Jungle Juice.” Subsequently, she was featured in the dramas Kim Su-ro: The Iron King, Splendid Politics and Bachelor’s Vegetable Shop; and the films The Suicide Forecast and In Love and War to name a few.

Chae Bin portrayed Kang Ye-jin and played the character of the charming heroine in the 2020 KBS drama Secret Man.

Through an interview, the actress talks about her experience and thoughts while working on her new play Really Bad Girl. She also expressed her excitement about the role. 


Accepting the role

Sharing the details of her first stage acting, Chae Bin shared how she got involved in the play. According to her, after she decided to take the role and was given the script, she was immediately impressed after reading the screenplay of Really Bad Girl and instantly began working on the project.


Playing on Stage

Chae Bin shares her sentiments about being on stage and its unfamiliarity. She even voiced the nervousness of her first time performing. Regardless, she also mentions her gratitude for being in the play.

“I’m thrilled at the thought of showcasing the range of acting in several ways. I am honored to be an actress who can perform on stage. I want to demonstrate an acting style that leaves no regrets.”

She also notes how different the environment is from the media acting she has done before. The actress also expresses her worries during the preparation and the beauty of stage acting.

“Being concerned about making errors in dialogue, experiencing the pressure of having the audience directly in front of you, and the strain of performing on stage. But the fact that the audience and performers share the same air space is the greatest appeal of stage acting. I believe there were several difficulties with performing on camera and acting on stage. However, these concerns result from an actor’s desire to expand their range.”

Preparation for Work

Chae Bin narrates the enjoyment of being able to experiment freely through attempting, correcting, and enhancing her performance during practice.

Confessing that she’s a little timid, the actress tells how she settled in quickly with her fellow actors. She shares how approachable they are and how much they like to joke around. She also disclosed her admiration for the performers and staff, remarking on what a solid team they formed.

“Because this is a collaborative project, we may clash, argue, or get sensitive. All the performers are practicing with a smile and having a nice time, despite the fact that achieving a good performance is challenging.”


About the Play

The play Really Bad Girl is a thriller in which the protagonist Kim Yo-ah was raped by her father as a kid and had to live with the scars until she reached high school. After seven years of stillness, she plots her own revenge. 

Chae Bin described her character Yo-ah as a miserable girl. She is quiet and lives as a perfect student without consolation for her suffering. 

“Although the play’s title describes her as a bad girl, she is just really sick.”

Memorable Moments

Sharing her memorable scene in the play, Chae Bin recounts the unforgettable moment they first read the complete screenplay.

“I was really anxious and shaking. It was the first time everyone had met, so after the moment of silence, the director instructed the youngest to read first, so I did. I still remember the strain and trembling.”

Lastly, the actress has a message to all the audience who will come to will come to see the play.

“It is comparable to a gem that may truly touch the souls and hearts of those who watch our play. I hope you like the performance and experience a profound resonance in your heart.  We will provide a spectacle that will leave a lasting impression on the whole audience.”
