INTERVIEW: Kim Woo Bin Updates Fans About His Recovery and Comeback Project

From being diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer five years ago, Kim Woo Bin came back healthy and ready for his film and drama projects.

After almost six years, the well-loved Korean actor Kim Woo Bin returned to the small and big screens. The actor entertained the questions of the press and the fans in an interview on July 18 at a cafe in Sogyeok-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. Likewise, this was also his first interview since he took a break from the industry to heal from sickness.

When asked about his health condition, the actor shared that he received good test results last week. All smiles and grateful for his recovery, he told the press that his 5-year treatment had ended. He is now healthier and cancer-free. Additionally, he thanked the fans and everyone for their support.

“I think I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. Yesterday, I was very excited. After being diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer in 2017, I took a break.”

On April 9 this year, tvN‘s Our Blues (2022) premiered. The omnibus drama was his comeback series. Kim Woo Bin portrayed the role of Park Jeong-jun, the boat captain of the Haenyeo divers of Pureung, Jeju.

Moreover, he transformed into a guard that escorts alien prisoners. In particular, he starred in the Sci-fi flick movie Alienoid (Alien + Human) Part 1 with renowned actress Kim Tae Ri. 

Recalling His Hiatus & Comeback

Kim Woobin and Director Choi Dong-hoon seemingly have a close bond. It was unfortunate five years ago that after agreeing to appear in Director Choi’s film. However, Kim found out he had nasopharyngeal cancer. As a result, production was halted.

Following that, Kim Woo Bin is delighted to be a part of the cast ensemble of Alienoid (Alien + Human), directed by Choi Dong-hoon, as his comeback project. Subsequently, he also recalled how he contemplated returning to the director’s work

In detail, the Korean film Alienoid describes the tale of the door of time opening between sages who want to claim the new sword amid rumors of the Goryeo Dynasty’s demise. It also chronicles the characters’ story, who pursue an alien prisoner trapped in a human body.

“I couldn’t do the first movie and the director told me not to worry about anything else and only focus on recovery. I really only paid attention to recovery. I had a thought that I had to go when I could, so I was comfortable with the feeling that the heavens gave me a vacation, and then my condition gradually improved, and around the time when I thought, ‘Can I think about returning at this point?’ He told me about this ‘alien + man’ scenario.”


On Filming Alienoid

Indeed, his bond with the director runs deep. In fact, he shared during the interview that he instantly chose to accept the screenplay of Director Choi Dong-hoon despite the other offers he had received following the news of his comeback.

“‘Even when other screenplay proposals came, I said that I wanted to see Director Choi Dong-hoon’s work first.”

Furthermore, the actor shared his experience in taking up his role in this project. According to him, he had a conversation with Director Choi Dong-hoon about acting as a robot. He told the press how he envisioned and internalized his character.

The actor happily discussed his insights and overview of the new Korean Sci-fi film he is starring in. He divulged how he closely worked with the director in conceptualizing how he would bring to life his role for the movie.

” ‘Isn’t it enough to express it as much as I can imagine?’ And because it was a robot made for that mission, I thought a lot about its energy.”
