Seemingly a tribute to unmarried breadwinners taking care of their families, Crash Course In Romance hints at a picture of how a special connection can thrive even with bad first impressions.
tvN’s new weekend series, Crash Course In Romance, is familiar but nonetheless fun on its first-week outing. The good news is that the cast can be trusted to make the relatively prosaic story into something engrossing.

Crash Course In Romance Opening Week Highlights
Raising a daughter alone while taking care of her brother with a disability, Nam Haeng-seon (Jeon Do Yeon) remains positive in raising money.
Opening her heart to marriage possibilities is the least of her priority. Instead, she channels her effort to provide for her daughter (niece in reality) Hae-yi and brother Jae-woo.
Proud that Hae-yi is self-reliant, she feels grateful that she does not need any after-school academy classes since she can study on her own. However, she is not aware that Hae-yi is really struggling and wants to take a Math course offered by elite teacher Choi Chi-yeol (Jung Kyung Ho). Fortunately, Haeng-seon managed to secure a spot in Chi-yeol’s class for Hae-yi.
In a twist of fate, Haeng-seon had a not-so-friendly encounter with him when he mistook Jae-woo who was just admiring his jacket as a stalker. Chi-yeol’s problem escalates as his current condition of being unable to eat well has seen an improvement when he ate the food brought by his assistant Dong-hee (Shin Jae Ha).
Ironically, the food came from Haeng-seon’s store. So, he has to go faintly incognito when he visited there to buy food. When he overhears her talking with her friend about the phone thief they encountered previously, Chi-yeol bought a new phone and gave it to Haeng-seon.
Following her friend’s fearless forecast that the new regular customer is into her, she prepares to return the gift. But then, Jae-woo recognized Chi-yeol as the phone thief and so is Haeng-seon.
Just then, a round bullet breaks the window of Haeng-seon’s store stopping the verbal mayhem about to erupt between them.
Crash Course In Romance Opening Week Musings
While the story was neat and flowing, there’s something missing to be fully invested in the “chasing love” picture the series appears to be heading to.
Laying the foundation of Chi-yeol’s past trauma and Haeng-seon’s possible deviation from what she has foreseen to be her life’s direction; the series would appeal more to middle-aged viewers. That’s why probably the secondary young love featured for Hae-yi and Sun-jae was also presented to cover the young audience.
Starting on the wrong foot, eventually, things will get better between Haeng-seon and Chi-yeol. Mutually, they will benefit from each other given he needs to eat her food while she wants to do anything for her daughter.
Honestly, there’s nothing much seen in the launch week but the emotional backgrounds of the main leads. Hopefully, it’s one of those that takes time to settle or just preparing to bloom sweetly.
Watch Haeng-seon heals Chi-yeol’s pain with her yummy side dishes and expected interactions in Crash Course In Romance every weekend on tvN!
