Fighting the social injustices, Si Eun proved that he was not an easy target in Weak Hero.
Si Eun (Park Ji Hoon) faced lots of circumstances as Young Bin (Kim Su Gyeom) chose him to be his next “prey”. One afternoon after the class, a bunch of people was waiting for Si Eun to come out.
In this emergency situation, Beom Seok (Hong Kyung) convinces Suho (Choi Hyun Wook) to help him fight the gang. From this on, a special bond was forged by the “weak heroes.”

Weak Hero Opening Week Story
“Are you bored? Why don’t you stop wasting your time and go study English?”
The homeroom teacher announced that the people in their class won awards in the recent school’s math competition. Si Eun, the school’s pride, won first place. On the other hand, Young Bin got the third spot.
Out of the blue, Young Bin sets his eyes on him and becomes his next target. He suddenly hit him and acted like it was an accident. Si Eun warns him to be careful and not to cause another one as he stared at him with furious eyes.
Meanwhile, a bunch of football players causes a scene in their room by asking if there is a student named “Ahn Suho”. He asks Suho if he was hitting on his girlfriend named Na Eun. The sleepyhead Suho teases him by asking him whose girlfriend he was referring to.
“She kept messaging me so I had a meal with her once”, he remarked. The player was pissed and the team fought him one by one. Suho showcases his ability to fight and win over them.
The collision caused a mess in the room that made Si Eun’s pen case fall. Suho asked him if it was his fault. When Si Eun answered, he immediately picked it up. This was their first not-so-charming conversation.
“You make me so proud, Si Eun!”
Si Eun may not have the ideal relationship with his family but his father makes sure to check up on him despite his busy schedule and acknowledges his achievements from time to time. In the first episode, his father asked him if he was still in touch with her.
Turns out the professor he was watching was his mother. “I was just studying”, he answered. In the video, the professor mentioned that his son is a top student in his school. She doesn’t need to nag him because he does well on his own. Si Eun may not be the best at expressing himself, but his parents make sure to spoil him with words of affirmation.
“Do you have a death wish?”
Si Eun was aware that Young Bin did something with his P.E. uniform even before the class started. Worn out from running in the field, he bravely confronts him to stop bothering him in front of his classmates.
Young Bin, together with his friends, cornered and strangled him until he was slowly losing his energy. Luckily, the teacher came to the scene but the boys told him that they were just messing around.
Oh Bum Seok becomes part of the picture as he transferred from Mungang High School. Apparently, it is the school of rich people. Young Bin asks Bum Seok if he knows Ji Won but he denies it immediately. Sensing Bum Seok’s nervous eyes, he already got what it meant.
The interaction ends when Si Eun arrives as Young Bin was occupying his seat. He asks him to move and that makes Bum Seok annoyed. This was the first time Si Eun played with his knock pen.
“It won’t be as potent but it’s still a painkiller. It’ll make you feel a little muzzy. You’ll get dull and sleepy.”
Jeong Chan suggested that the only way they can destroy Si Eun is by messing up his grades. Getting high in the club, Young Bin asked his cousin Seok Dae about the drug. Knowing that Young Bin already has a plan in mind, Seok Dae reminded him not to go overboard.
The next day, Young Bin threatened Beom Seok about his past. He was beaten and bullied numerous times which led to trauma. Young Bin even mocked him that he transferred schools like a loser. To keep the secret hidden, Beom Seok was asked to put the patch on Si Eun’s neck. This made Si Eun feel dizzy, which caused him to have a lot of mistakes on the test.
Si Eun was furious and let them taste their own medicine. He used Newton’s second law of motion as a reference as this can create a greater impact. He slapped his apprentice and pierced his sharp-pointed pen. Using the same book, he slapped Young Bin multiple times before wrapping his face in the curtain. The blood is evident as he continually hits him.
“Aren’t you ashamed to gang up on someone? If I were you, I’d be humiliated to death.”
Si Eun didn’t come unprepared as he made sure to bring the evidence with him. He let off everything from Young-bin’s bag and a box of Fentanyl was found. The culprit is dumbfounded as he didn’t have any idea what it was. “A drug”, Si Eun mentioned. The homeroom teacher suggested that he should transfer to another school as things could get out of hand if it goes public.
The news is out and Young Bin has already transferred schools. His friends invited him to see them after class but the lion-hearted Si Eun suggested doing it now. Si Eun is not the school’s top student for no reason. This time, he used Pavlov’s dog and bell’s experiment. He made them remember how he pierced his sharp-pointed pen on their hands. “Let’s stop, please”, he announced.
Beom Seok sees how Young Bin and the gang cornered Si Eun. He even overheard that his cousin was notorious in the neighborhood. Young Bin immediately runs back to the room to see if Suho was still there.
He asks him to help Si Eun as he was dragged away by a bunch of people. Suho was convinced when Beom Seok offered to pay double his wage.
Suho and Beom Seok came to the rescue as Si Eun is losing his energy to fight. Seok Dae, the gang leader, decides to call it a day. Young Bin is frustrated as he was still not satisfied. Suho teases them more that Seok Dae is already humiliated.
Leaving the place, Si Eun reminded Young Bin once more to stop it. Since then, the trio found friendship in the chaos.
Weak Hero Opening Week Musings (Spoilers alert!)
Weak Hero portrays the main characters as weak students who look soft on the outside and don’t have a capability to fight for themselves, like in a typical drama. However, Yeon Si Eun, Ahn Suho, and Oh Beom Seok refuse to be one of them. The trio started from chaotic encounters to a comforting friendship.
Si Eun’s strong mentality and physical capability made me speechless. He already knew that Young Bin and his friends’ can be extremely violent to their victims. Yet, he looked at Young Bin with his furious eyes, not giving him the satisfaction that he wanted. He even warned him to be careful next time.
I appreciate how Suho protects Si Eun in his own little ways even before their friendship started. He may look ignorant but he cares for the people around him. Suho knows that Si Eun doesn’t show much affection so he makes the move to get closer to him. The scene at the cafeteria wherein Si Eun pretends to treat Suho to a meal made my heart flutter. They’re slowly opening up to each other by revealing the reason why Si Eun always wore his earphones on and why Suho sleeps in school.
Usually, people approach a transferee student to make friends with them. However, in Weak Hero, they are considered as the “class dog”. When Young Bin spoke to Beom Seok, I already knew that he was planning something in mind. He even used Beom Seok’s trauma response to feed his ego. Beom Seok transferred school to have a fresh start but he still got the same treatment.
Beom Seok’s character makes me want to create a protection squad for him. He is a soft-hearted person who knows how to treat people properly. If only people would stop taking advantage of him. The way he immediately ran to save Si Eun from the gang indicates that he doesn’t want other people to suffer the same way. Nonetheless, there is also a possibility that he was just guilty for what he did.
The characters show great chemistry in the first few episodes. Their differences fill the missing pieces. I hope they can become each other’s strength and healing at the same time. Through this, I feel like Beom Seok can gain his courage to stand up for himself and move forward. I can’t wait to witness how their friendship will grow in the next episodes!
