Leading a narrative about one’s goals in life, Double Patty builds a support system between hardworking characters that met through food.
Like her father, Lee Hyun-ji (Irene) aspires to enter the world of journalism by preparing to be an anchor. Hyun-ji is hardworking in both preparing for her application, but also in working for her side jobs. At night, she works for a burger restaurant, and also studies there in her free time.
Kang Woo-ram (Shin Seung Ho) trains to become a Korean wrestler with the help of his mentor Lee Sung-min. With the death of his mentor, he leaves training, and heads to Seoul. He gets recruited to work at a bar, and also encounters Hyun-ji several times after his work.
Entering a burger restaurant, he feels shocked as he sees Hyun-ji working there. With the midnight promo deal of the restaurant, Woo-ram becomes a regular customer. One night after receiving a message about his mentor’s funeral, he arrives at the restaurant drunk.
Warm Encouragement from a Stranger
Coincidentally watching a video clip about Woo-ram’s mentor on the same night, Hyun-ji realizes who Woo-ram is. She tends to Woo-ram who is drunk, and they encourage each other while sharing a meal. As they drink for the second round, Hyun-ji joins Woo-ram in coming back to his hometown for his mentor’s funeral.
Woo-ram finally faces his coach, and decides to come back to wrestling. With fresher energy, Hyun-ji also embarks on her journey in pursuit of her goal of becoming an anchor. Both Woo-ram and Hyun-ji strive hard for their goals, and in the end, successfully reach those.

Women Representation in the Journalism Field
Moon Hee-jung (Jung Young Joo) is an anchorwoman, and she is a senior to Lee Hyun-ji. In her lecture at the movie, she shares how at her time, female reporters were seen as flowers of the team. As she disagrees with that notion, she makes an effort and moves forward in her career. She decides to stay at her company, and take responsibility for the decisions she has made.
Hyun-ji also aspires to be part of the field of journalism, and throughout the movie, it is shown how she works several side jobs besides her preparations. She works hard for all the tasks she does, and makes sure not to fall behind in her screening preparations. Both women’s dedication and grit are truly something to look up to.
Inspiring Story about Perseverance
Kang Woo-ram and Lee Hyun-ji are characters that both have aspirations in life. Woo-ram aspires to rise up in the lightweight division of Korean wrestling. His career takes a step back after the death of his mentor. As he deals with his emotions, he decides to follow his dreams again, and come back stronger.
Meanwhile, Hyun-ji works hard to become a reporter and faces several failures as well on her applications. However, these do not stop her from trying again. Her motivation is greater than her setbacks and true to that she reaches her dreams at the end.
Both characters may have not always succeeded in their own fields. They have several encounters of loss, but they still chose to pursue their goal. With their grit and the warm encouragement around, the two reach success.
Double Patty movie Musings
Irene and Shin Seung Ho’s performances are good, evident in their own individual scenes. They kept up with their character’s set mood and role, performing accordingly. Props to Shin Seung Ho’s preparations for his body, and also expressions on his wrestling scenes.
As the movie explicitly states that it is inspired by a real story, I have expected a lot with the plot progression. It succeeded in subtly including several social issues about fair opportunities, representation, and freedom of the press. However, it could have been better with more dialogues.
Various shots of food were mouthwatering and visually attractive to the eye. The midnight promo for the burger was a pivotal connection between the two leads. At first, they were just two strangers passing by each other’s lives, but with food the two are connected with each other, sharing their own aspirations in life.
Discussing the topic of dreams, the movie imparts that a person should pursue one’s goals despite the setbacks. Like Hyun-ji, the pursuit of her goal may have not been smooth-sailing, but one should never give up. Learning from one’s mistakes, and trying again with a new mindset takes someone a step closer to their dreams. In addition to that, others’ support may also give us a push in taking a brave step forward for our dreams in life.
The movie is lighthearted and can be watched without thinking much about anything. Fans of Irene may enjoy her acting, visuals, and sweet voice throughout the movie, as well as the movie’s OST. Other viewers may watch this movie while passing time by, and pick up the messages it is trying to impart.
