In a special interview, actress Kang Min Ah talked about her recently-concluded KBS drama At a Distance Spring Is Green.
Actress Kang Min Ah sat down for an interview to talk about the conclusion of her KBS drama At A Distance Spring Is Green.
Based on a webtoon, At A Distance Spring Is Green is a heartwarming school drama that follows the struggles and love stories of mediocre college students. Kang Min Ah portrayed the role of Kim So Bin, a 3rd year Marketing student who is sincere and honest yet struggles with her ordinary life.
On her preparations for her first lead role
Kang Min Ah made her debut as a child actress, but At a Distance Spring Is Green was her first lead role in a drama.
“At first I thought, ‘I’m finally the lead’. Ever since I was young, acting has been the most important thing in my life. I reflected on my experiences while growing up and was grateful for the opportunity. I did feel a sense of pressure on how viewers would react. But I realized that even though I had more scenes, I was just a part of the drama. A drama is made by many people. Once I had decided to do my best in my role, I was able to escape pressure.”
She added, “As the number of scenes increased, the number of times you go to work on the set increased as well. And so I thought a lot about how to maintain my stamina more than I had before.
In the previous films, I would pour everything I had into a single day, but now I had to think about whether I could maintain the same energy for the second half. So, I took a lot of nutritional supplements. Does that make me sound old?”
Discussing the process of how she prepared for her role in the drama, Kang Min Ah explained, “To play efficiently, I think from webtoon fan’s point of view. I read the original story because I thought viewers will appreciate it if I focused on the main characteristics and charm of my character.”
It’s comfortable to act out as someone who shares the same traits with you, but So Bin and I have nothing in common. I’m not shy, I talk a lot, and I’m very sociable. I’m the type to talk without filters and the moment I go home, I say to myself, ‘Did I talk too much?’
She added, “And when I’m in a relationship, I hate being frustrated. I don’t raise my voice and get into fights, but I can speak harshly when I need to. If I feel like I’m going to get angry, I just say it in advance. I tend to express my feelings honestly when I start to like someone as well.”
On her first lead role
Although Kang Min Ah was completely different from the character she’s playing, she had efficiently portrayed her first lead role. While the show secured 1-2% ratings, it has created a loud buzz thanks to the actors’ effective performances.
She said, “Whether it’s a drama or a film, whenever I start filming, I think about my performance more than the numbers. Even if the ratings are high, I feel bad when my acting doesn’t come out well on screen. But even if the ratings are low, I feel good if I like my performance.”
“I tend to read real-time comments, and I feel grateful that the viewers enjoyed our drama. Actually, I am relieved after seeing a lot of comments saying, ‘You’re doing a good job.‘”
Speaking about her first-ever lead role in a drama, Kang Min Ah shared, At A Distance, Spring Is Green is even more special since it’s my first drama where I am the main lead. There were fun moments on the set, and I think it will be remembered as a scene where I met good friends in my 20s. I hope it’s the kind of drama which viewers think of when they want to feel spring.”
On her passion for acting
Pledging to work hard in the second half of this year, the actress conveys, “I have no intention of resting. I can’t stand being bored or sitting still. If I had another job, I would have acted one day. That’s how fun acting is for me.”
She added, “Filming is the same, but you portray different characters and lines every time. I’ve never felt bored because of the characteristics of this job, which requires me to continue to experience new scenes. With a new environment and excitement about meeting new people, I try to give my best in acting. Everything is hard anyway. You have to do what you love to do for you to last a long time in the industry.”
