In a recent media interview, Kim Mi Kyung shared stories about the ‘mothers’ she played in her recent works.
In Welcome to Samdalri, the veteran actress plays the role of Go Mi-ja, the president of the Samdalri Haenyeo Association and the mother of Jo Sam-dal’s (Shin Hye Sun) and her sisters.
She also showed a distinctly memorable character as the mother of Choi Yi-jae (Seo In Guk) in Death’s Game as well as Mo-eun’s (Shin Hyun Been) mother in Genie TV’s Tell Me That You Love Me. Currently, in MBC’s currently airing Knight Flower, she gave a passionate performance as Yeo-hwa’s (Honey Lee) mother-in-law.
Kim Mi Kyung, whose various works were released around the same time, said, “Strangely, if I don’t have work, I spend a few months idle, but when work comes in, I do it all at once.”
Explaining how she goes through the creative process after all the mother roles she played, Kim made a resonating answer.
“There are many mothers in each work, but the environments are different and the characters are different. I try to fit in with that, but when I look at mothers alone, I basically start with our mothers who think only about their children. I don’t lose sight of who I am and who I am as a mother.“
Kim Mi Kyung first played a mother role in Ryu Seung-beom’s mother in Sunlight Pours Down (2003) in her 40s, saying, “I remember having 70 or 80 children. I have many friends who I still keep in touch with.”
When asked about the children he remembers the most, she said, “They are the children who came first. Even while filming the drama, I try to approach them with sincerity.” Kim mentions lingering fondness for her children in Confession Couple, Hi Bye Mama, and Death’s Game.
Regarding the title ‘nation’s mother,’ she said with a smile, “I’m so embarrassed. I’m my daughter’s mother, too. I’m so thankful just for telling me that. I don’t think I’m at the level yet to hear that title.”
