Song Hye Kyo’s Big Screen Return Features a Dauntless Transformation in “Dark Nuns”

After an eight-year hiatus from the big screen, Song Hye Kyo is making her highly anticipated return with Dark Nuns.

She takes on the role of Sister Junia, a fearless and determined woman who risks everything to save a young boy. Her character is known for her bold, impulsive nature and unwavering spirit, making her a focal point in the story.

Since her debut, Song Hye Kyo has maintained an air of mystery, rising to stardom at a young age and captivating audiences ever since. However, in preparation for her film’s release, she has stepped into the spotlight like never before, appearing on various entertainment shows and web content, and making a deliberate effort to connect with the public.

I took part in these promotions because of the project, but honestly, so much has changed in the past decade. I wanted to reach out to younger audiences, many of whom recognize me from The Glory,” she shared. “That’s why I decided to appear on YouTube and You Quiz on the Block after much thought.

While she was initially hesitant, she was pleasantly surprised by the warm reception. “At first, I wondered, ‘Will people like this? Will they find it fun?’ But hearing that I seemed more open and refreshing made me happy.” She also addressed the long-standing perception of her as a ‘mystical’ actress. “It wasn’t intentional. Back then, actors were simply promoted that way. But times have changed, and I think adapting to the present is only natural.

She noted that her most authentic self can be seen in Kang Min-kyung’s vlog, where she had more control over the footage, making it feel raw and personal. Song Hye-kyo even showcased her musical side in a moment that left fans delighted. She covered Uhm Jung-hwa’s After Love on Kang Min-kyung’s web content, joking, “I fell for her trick after having a drink!” She explained that she had always loved Uhm Jung-hwa’s songs and, after casually humming the tune, Kang Min-kyung spontaneously convinced her to record it. “Luckily, people seemed to enjoy it, especially since the visuals in the vlog complemented the song. Even Uhm Jung-hwa was amused, jokingly saying, ‘Aren’t you singing better than me?’”

Beyond her acting prowess, Song Hye Kyo is also known for her strong connections in the industry. “I’ve been fortunate to work with people with great personalities, and we’ve formed lasting bonds. I always say I’m a lucky person.” One of those meaningful friendships is with Suzy, whom she recently posted about on social media. “Suzy is someone I can truly open up to. She may be younger, but she’s incredibly mature, and we communicate effortlessly. Our conversations are always enriching, and I often forget about our age difference.”

Meeting Song Hye Kyo in person was mesmerizing. At 40, she remains stunning, but her poised, thoughtful demeanor truly stands out. She carefully listened to every question and responded with a calm, composed tone. “I love hearing compliments about my acting more than about my looks. Praise for my performance means everything to me.” Though no longer just admired for her beauty, it was refreshing to see her still hungry for recognition as an actress.

When asked about the positive feedback on her YouTube content, she admitted she rarely checks comments. “They’re meant for me, but these days, I focus more on putting myself first. For my own well-being, I try not to look at them too much.” She also clarified a past remark about not wanting articles about her on Naver News, explaining, “If they’re good articles, I’m happy.” When netizens commented that her new haircut for her upcoming drama, Slowly, Intensely, made her look like a high school student, she playfully responded, “I’ll work on growing it out.”

Song Hye Kyo now prioritizes a life of tranquility. “These days, I find happiness in simply being safe. Whether it’s an interview or the people I meet, I’m just grateful when everything goes smoothly. I feel more at peace than before, and people around me say I look more relaxed. Everyone defines happiness differently, but for me, it’s about feeling secure.

Dark Nuns follows a group attempting a forbidden ritual to save a boy possessed by a powerful evil spirit and was released on January 24th. It will have its global release in cinemas worldwide.
