Lee Yoon Ji Celebrates 20th Anniversary With Career-Defining Role In “Dream Palace”

Lee Yoon Ji

Gracing the May issue of Women’s Joseon, Lee Yoon Ji details insights about her most uncompromising and controversial work of the year.

Featured in a French chic-themed pictorial, Lee Yoon Ji shares meaningful thoughts about achieving two decades of an acting career.

Her upcoming film, Dream Palace is a social realism drama depicting the struggles of two women to protect an apartment they bought at the cost of their husbands’ lives.

The film delves into real-life issues tackling unsold apartments and the real estate crisis.

Dream Palace won the grand prize in the 2019 Film Council Scenario Contest with the review that it was “a moving scenario that makes your heart excited while chasing the pain of an unknown reality from the female protagonist’s point of view.”

After its first public release at the Busan International Film Festival last year, it announced the debut of an outstanding new director, receiving attention not only for its solid screenplay based on a heavy theme consciousness but also for its highly absorbing directing skills.

Kim Sun Young, who plays Hyejeong, who struggles to protect her family’s Dream Palace, won the Best Actress Award at the 20th Asian Film Festival (Rome Asian Film Festival), receiving rave reviews for her “exploding performance bearing the weight of absurdity”.

Anticipation for the film’s release in May is heightened. In addition, the acting chemistry between Kim Sun Young and Lee Yoon Ji is phenomenal.

In the film, Lee Yoon Ji takes on the role of Su-in, who lives fiercely after losing her husband and raising her young siblings. She shows off a restrained emotional performance that cuts deep into the heart of viewers.

Correspondingly, the May cover issue of Women’s Joseon flaunts an indifferent but sophisticated vibe of the actress.

Her colorful expressions in urban look, nonchalant attitude, natural hairstyle, and subdued makeup attract attention.

Revealing her thoughts about her latest project, Lee Yoon Ji delineated the significance of Dream Palace to her career.

It’s the prettiest name among the roles I’ve played so far, so the time when I was called ‘Su-in’ was so hard. It was good, but behind a pretty name, she seems to be the person with the most painful story.

When asked about the point of watching the movie, she said, “I think it would be good if you look at it from the point of view of the residents who live in Dream Palace. Thankfully, I had a chance to see the reaction of the audience during the Busan International Film Festival or stage greeting, and I saw people of various ages immersed in their respective positions. I picked a solid narrative and theme.”

Regarding her acting philosophy, Lee conveyed a profound response.

I think I learn how to live well through acting. It is not even a philosophy. Also, I want to continue acting. It is really a blessing that this passion of mine continues.”

The May issue of Women’s Joseon, featuring more diverse actress Lee Yoon Ji’s pictorial and in-depth interview, will be available online and at bookstores nationwide from April 24. It can also be found on Women’s Joseon’s official website, Kakao Story, and Instagram.

Dream Palace, the most uncompromising film of the year in 2023, is scheduled to find audiences in theaters nationwide in May.
