Disney+ has announced an all-star cast for its upcoming original series, Tempest. The highly anticipated show will feature a captivating blend of seasoned actors and rising stars, promising a thrilling and immersive viewing experience.
Set for release on Disney+ in 2025, the Korean thriller Tempest promises a gripping mix of assassinations, political intrigue, conspiracies, and espionage.
The plot centers on Munju, a skilled diplomat and former U.S. ambassador, and Sanho, an international special agent, as they unravel the truth behind an attack endangering the Korean peninsula’s future stability.
Accordingly, the meeting of these two dynamic characters, who come from vastly different worlds but share a common goal, is one of the most anticipated aspects of the show.
Tempest showcases the highly anticipated collaboration of two of Korea’s most esteemed actors. Gianna Jun (My Love from the Star, Legend of the Blue Sea) plays Seo Munju, a sharp-witted diplomat investigating the source of a deadly assault. Kang Dong Won (Broker and Peninsula) stars as Sanho, a mysterious agent cloaked in secrets.
Some of South Korea’s most beloved and veteran actresses add even more depth to the series. Kim Hae Sook, who has masterfully played a variety of complex roles across multiple genres, takes on the role of Chae Kyung-sin, the President of the Republic of Korea. Her character is expected to bring a sense of authority and gravitas to the series, offering a counterpoint to Moon-ju’s more politically active role.
Alongside her, Lee Mi Sook, another powerhouse actress known for her striking screen presence and charismatic performances, will play Im Ok-seon, Moon-ju’s formidable mother-in-law. The interplay between Moon-ju and Ok-seon, who carry significant influence and power, is likely to become a pivotal part of the drama’s dynamic, raising expectations for the chemistry between these seasoned actresses.
The cast continues to shine with Yoo Jae Myung, an actor known for his commanding presence and charisma, who will portray the Director of the National Intelligence Service, an authority figure deeply involved in the unfolding events of the series. Park Hae Joon, a highly regarded actor who gained widespread attention for his roles in The World of the Married and 12:12 The Day, takes on the role of Moon-ju’s husband, Joon-ik. With his excellent range and intense screen presence, Park is expected to add layers to the drama, especially in his role as Moon-ju’s steadfast partner, whose loyalty and connection with her are key to her personal and professional journey.
The supporting cast also includes Oh Jung Se, whose acting spectrum knows no bounds, playing Jun-sang, the younger brother of Joon-ik. Oh’s ability to transform into any role ensures that Jun-sang will be a character filled with complexity. Lee Sang Hee, praised for his stellar work in films and dramas like My Name is Lokiwan and Daily Dose of Sunshine will play Yeo Mi-ji, a long-time assistant to Moon-ju. Lee’s solid acting skills make him a perfect fit for a character likely to be a constant and supportive presence in Moon-ju’s life.
Joo Jong-hyuk, whose filmography includes Extraordinary Attorney Woo, will take on the role of Park Chang-hee, Jun-ik’s assistant, further strengthening the cast with his sharp, sensitive portrayal of a supporting character.
Rookie actress Won Ji An, who impressed audiences in Made in Korea, plays Kang Han-na, a mysterious figure who holds vital secrets about Jun-ik. Han-na’s character, whose role is closely tied to the central mystery of the plot, is expected to be one of the most intriguing aspects of the show. She brings fresh energy to the series, and her character is poised to play a pivotal role in unraveling the complex web of lies and secrets that surrounds Moon-ju and San-ho.
Perhaps the most exciting addition to the cast is Hollywood actor John Cho, who is known internationally for his roles in Star Trek and the film Search. John Cho’s inclusion in Tempest marks his first appearance in a Korean original series, adding an international star power that will undoubtedly draw global attention. He will portray the US Assistant Secretary of State, a role that is likely to involve complex political negotiations and contribute to the international intrigue that defines the series. Cho’s experience in both Hollywood and Korean cinema makes him a perfect fit for this crossover role, and fans can’t wait to see his contribution to this thrilling drama.
The series is directed by Kim Heewon (Queen of Tears, Little Women, Vincenzo) with co-direction by top martial arts director Heo Myunghaeng (The Outlaws 4), and written by Chung Seokyung (Decision to Leave, The Handmaiden, Little Women).
Look out for Tempest, exclusively on Disney+ in 2025.
