Doctor Lawyer marked its premiere on June 3 on MBC.
But before that, the lead stars and directors met the media to give quick peeks about the series at the recent drama presentation.
The lead stars So Ji Sub, Shin Sung Rok and Im Soo Hyang graced the event together with Director Lee Yong Seok.
Doctor Lawyer tells the story of an elite surgeon who specializes in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery, Han Yi Han. His life then transformed as a surgery he conducted and is confident to be successful, unexpectedly fails.
As Yi-han’s medical license lifts, he returns four years later as a lawyer, specializing in medical litigation. While defending victims from medical malpractice and negligence, he is also on a mission to unveil the secrets behind the death of his last patient.
On Working Together As A Team
First, Director Lee remarked the filming process was fun and comfortable.
“All three of them have excellent acting skills. There was a sense of pressure to lead dramas, but not in Doctor Lawyer. I have been directing it for a long time, but I think it was the most comfortable and fun process.”
Echoing the director’s thoughts, So Ji Sub also praised Im Soo Hyang for nailing well the emotional scenes.
“The experience was really good. What surprised me was that Im Soo-hyang had a lot of emotional scenes in the early episodes, but it felt good to see her so immersed. She continued to come out like a fountain that tears never dry out.
Equally praising Shin Sung Rok, the top actor relayed how his character can only be done by him.
Agreeing with Shin’s impeccable rendition of his character, Im Soo Hyang remarked learning a lot from him. Additionally, she felt honored to work with respected and talented seniors and was amazed by their working attitude.
When asked about the casting of the lead roles, Director Lee explained it fully.
“So Ji Sub is So Ji Sub. Shin Sung Rok was the only candidate considered for the character with madness. The character Im Soo Hyang plays is a role that has the most emotional spectrum and is not easy. They are actors who are like a comprehensive gift set.”
A Nostalgic Reunion For The Actor and The Director
Sharing their old connection, Director Lee conveyed how the project was a perfect reunion for him and So Ji Sub.
“I tried historical dramas, genre films, comedies, and passionate melodies, but I was afraid of medical dramas. There is much to prepare. I chose this so I can walk on a new path this time. I also heard rumors that So Ji Sub was interested. He also had a desire to see him after a long time and solve the case.”
So Ji Sub reveals Director Lee picked him and made his debut in 1996. Quipping a fun remark on how the actor has not changed at all in terms of coming to the set early, the crowd laughed at So’s working attitude.
So Ji Sub’s Anticipated Drama Comeback
Returning to the small screen after four years, the actor expressed his thoughts about Doctor Lawyer.
“The premise of the script was attractive, but the two jobs the characters had were equally attractive. There were a lot of things that appear different but feel the same. It made me feel better that I made a good choice.”
Portraying a prosecutor and a doctor, So admitted that it was challenging work. He plays two different professions, so he practiced as much as possible so that viewers would not feel awkward.
He practiced and pondered a lot. Focusing and repeating the routine while checking if he missed something, he memorized the script as if studying.
“It wasn’t as difficult as I thought, but it was difficult to do the lines. I kept practicing, memorizing and checking. Actually, there were always people who gave legal advice and surgery advice in the drama. I was helped by them.”
As one of South Korea’s representative actors, he also responded to the burden of the expectations set for him.
I’m always nervous when I show my work. Fortunately, I am making good projects with good actors and staff, so I am less nervous than before. It seems to be a reliable mindset. Every work must be done with a will.”
Shin Sung Rok Adds Another Remarkable Role To His Bucket
Known for his versatility, chameleon actor Shin Sung Rok talks about the important points of his character.
“Jaden Lee has lived overseas for a long time. That part is very different from me. I expressed the Korean feeling with my mental strength as much as possible. I wanted to play an aggressive and spontaneous character, excluding the feeling that it could be rigid because I am an executive of a large company.”
