PRESS CONFERENCE: Go Ara and Jang Ryul Turn Up the Heat in “The Scandal of Chunhwa”

The historical romance drama wave continues with The Scandal of Chunhwa, a daring and unconventional romance led by Go Ara and Jang Ryul.

On February 5th, the cast and crew, including director Lee Kwang-young and actors Kang Chan-hee, Son Woo-hyun, and Han Seung-yeon, gathered at CGV Yongsan I-PARK MALL in Seoul for the production conference of TVING’s latest original series.

Set in an era where rigid social hierarchies dictate love and marriage, The Scandal of Chunhwa follows Princess Hwa-ri (Go Ara), who, after a failed first love, boldly declares she will choose her own husband. As the city buzzes with gossip over the scandalous love story collection Chunhwa Yeonaedam, she finds herself entangled with the kingdom’s most notorious playboy, Choi Hwan (Jang Ryul), and the ideal suitor, Lee Jang-won (Kang Chan-hee). This refreshing take on a historical romance challenges norms with its fearless and witty storytelling.

Breaking Tradition with a Bold Narrative

Director Lee Kwang-young shared that the drama explores why such a risqué book existed in an era of strict social divisions. Despite its 19+ rating, the focus remains on the deeper motivations behind these passionate love stories. The drama promises an engaging mix of sensuality, self-discovery, and youthful rebellion.

A Stellar Cast Bringing Romance to Life

Go Ara returns to the screen after five years, eager to embrace this dynamic role. Stepping in for Go Ah-sung, she found the transition seamless, crediting her prior preparation for a historical drama. Her character, Princess Hwa-ri, stirs up royal chaos by insisting on choosing her own husband, evolving from a headstrong young woman into a more mature figure as the story unfolds.

Jang Ryul, in his first historical drama, plays Choi Hwan, the city’s top playboy. He described his character as someone with unexpected depth beneath his flashy exterior. “It was challenging to embody a flirtatious persona,” he admitted, joking that he even took extra care of his skin and diet to fit the role.

Kang Chan Hee portrays Lee Jang-won, a highly sought-after groom whose charisma sweeps through the kingdom. He expressed excitement about stepping into the role, eager to capture Jang-won’s cool and composed nature.

Han Seung Yeon plays Lee Ji-won, Jang-won’s younger sister, who struggles with love, while Son Woo-hyun portrays Hwa-ri’s older brother, the model crown prince Lee Seung.

Unmatched Chemistry and On-Set Energy

The cast members praised each other’s performances, highlighting their seamless chemistry. Jang Ryul was particularly impressed by Go Ara’s deep emotional connection to the script, while Kang Chan-hee appreciated her guidance and ability to create a natural, immersive experience. Go Ara, in turn, emphasized how the team’s synergy made their romantic interactions even more compelling.

The production team promises a visually stunning and musically rich experience, breaking away from conventional historical drama norms.

The Scandal of Chunhwa aims to deliver a fresh and exhilarating take on romance in a historical setting. Don’t miss the premiere on TVING at 12 PM on February 6th!
