Chun Ji Hye and Park Sang Woo’s revelation behind The Forbidden Marriage’s inspiration and its casting make you anticipate it even more.
Promising to add another delightful sageuk, The Forbidden Marriage explores the marriage ban ordered by King Yi Heon when he lost the crown princess seven years ago.
Based on a novel of the same name, the series follows the story of So-rang (Park Ju Hyun), who unexpectedly enters the palace. Together with Lee Heon (Kim Young Dae) and Lee Shin-won (Kim Woo Seok), they became inseparable, heightening curiosity as to why they got intertwined.
How The Forbidden Marriage Came To Life
The writer of The Forbidden Marriage, Chun Ji Hye, shared the inspiration behind the story and how she wanted to explore the increasing intensity and secrecy of romantic impulses throughout Joseon’s marriage ban era.
“I constructed the storyline while imagining how the characters would behave. I wondered how young men and women would respond if the marriage ban lasted for a long period because of an unexpected reason.”
Additionally, director Park Sang Woo outlined the aspects he highlighted when creating the film to satisfy the viewers.
“I created an episode that fulfills the web novel fans’ expectations while keeping the drama’s originality.”
Moreover, he revealed the parts he was anxious about during the shooting.
“I was concerned about demonstrating the connection between So Rang and the crown princess so the audience could grasp and sympathize with Heon’s feelings.”
The Actors And Their Roles
Chun Ji Hye shared her observations while working with the three main casts, who she described as having distinct personalities and excellent acting skills.
According to her, Park Joo Hyun was cheerful and energetic, and her lively demeanor resembled that of the actual So-rang. She also said she could sense her positive spirit just by hearing her speak.
The writer also expressed how the actor Kim Young Dae matched how she initially imagined King Lee Heon.
“During the script reading, it was fascinating to see how somberly he displays his grief over the loss of the Crown Princess.”
Casting
The drama’s director, Park Sang-woo, provided some backstory on the selection process of the three main casts.
Regarding the portrayal of So Rang, he remarks on Park Joo Hyun’s performance.
“I’ve been searching for a young actress who can lead a project for a very long time. Through her personal version of the character, she portrays the idea of the bold and fearless So Rang.”
Additionally, he mentioned how he chose Kim Young Dae as King Lee Heon without second doubts, elevating expectations for the role.
“I instantly thought of actor Kim Young Dae when I read ‘Lee Heon,’ the king who is true to love, as envisioned in the webtoon.”
He also recounted how he cancelled all the auditions for the role of Lee Shin Won after seeing Kim Woo Seok and described him as:
“An actor who captures and conveys the delicate emotional lines of Shin Won with precision.”
Why You Should Watch It
The writer Chun Ji Hye describes her expectation for The Forbidden Marriage in two keywords: ‘irony’ and ‘comic historical drama.’
“The world of The Forbidden Marriage is an ironic situation. The narrative of the people will become more dramatic at this time. I hope you will like the humor, modern dramatic aspects, and character play.”
In addition, Park Sang Woo further describes the drama as a parallel universe of Joseon on another planet, making it unique compared to conventional historical dramas.
“The setting may be odd and strange, but it has an outrageousness that disrupts the typical narrative of historical dramas.”
He also said that it contains a depiction of the past with which viewers living in the present may relate and assured the entertainment it would bring to its audience.
“While watching The Forbidden Marriage, viewers who are exhausted by the difficulties of everyday life can ignore reality and experience a sense of enjoyment.”
Finally, Chun Ji Hye leaves a message to convey to the viewers.
“I hope The Forbidden Marriage will be remembered as a lovely and passionate love. With a romantic comedy that mirrors the emotion of happiness, I wish to provide everyone with a pleasant thrill.”
