“Typhoon Family” Premieres October 11: Netflix’s Emotional Drama Set Amid South Korea’s 1997 Financial Crisis

Netflix is set to premiere Typhoon Family on October 11, a heartfelt drama that blends nostalgia, resilience, and personal transformation against the backdrop of South Korea’s 1997 financial crisis.

Typhoon Family captures how an entire generation of young people was forced to grow up overnight, exchanging carefree days for responsibility and survival, while still holding on to hope in uncertain times.

Leading the cast is Lee Jun Ho, fresh from his acclaimed role in King the Land. He stars as Kang Tae-poong, once a proud member of Apgujeong’s “Orange Tribe” — a group of wealthy youth in the 1990s known for their flashy fashion and extravagant lifestyles. Tae-poong’s privileged world crumbles when he unexpectedly inherits the role of CEO at a failing trading company. Forced to trade in luxury for leadership, he embarks on a journey of reluctant growth, transforming from indulgent youth to a figure of responsibility.

Joining him is Kim Min Ha, best known for her standout performance in Pachinko. She plays Oh Mi-seon, a determined and self-sacrificing woman who personifies the role of the eldest daughter in a struggling family. Mi-seon shoulders the weight of her loved ones’ needs while pursuing her own ambitions in a male-dominated workplace, making her one of the drama’s most relatable and inspiring figures.

The newly unveiled teaser poster channels the essence of 1997: fearless fashion, the vibrant energy of youth, and the looming challenges that will define their futures. Tae-poong’s transformation mirrors the lives of countless ordinary heroes of that era, people who faced financial collapse with resilience, grit, and a determination to rebuild.

Speaking about the project, Lee Jun-ho shared:

“After King the Land, I’m thrilled to return with Typhoon Family. I hope this story brings laughter, comfort, and genuinely resonates with you. It’s about rising with those you love, finding strength in unexpected places, and reconnecting with times gone by. I can’t wait for you to experience the 90s nostalgia and emotional journey with us.”

Kim Min-ha added her thoughts:

“I’m honored to play Oh Mi-seon. Typhoon Family was created with heart — from the cast to every member of the production team. I hope viewers not only watch but feel each moment — youth, hope, hardship, and triumph. Please join us on this unforgettable ride through the emotional and memorable scenes we’ve created.”

With its mix of nostalgia, heartfelt performances, and a fresh perspective on a pivotal moment in South Korea’s modern history, Typhoon Family promises to be both inspiring and moving.
