The storm is brewing on the small screen. tvN’s upcoming weekend drama Typhoon Family, set to air in the second half of 2025, has unveiled its high-energy script reading, spotlighting the dynamic duo of Lee Jun Ho and Kim Min Ha.
Billed as a drama that will hit like a typhoon, the session was nothing short of electrifying, bringing together a powerhouse cast and crew.
Directed by Lee Na-jung (Love Alarm, Mine) and penned by Jang Hyun, the series is produced by Studio Dragon, Imagineers, Studio PIC, and Tree Studio. The room was packed with acclaimed actors, including Kim Min Seok, Kwon Han Sol, Lee Chang Hoon, Kim Jae Hwa, Kim Song Il, Lee Sang Jin, Kim Ji Young, Kim Sang Ho, Mu Jin Seong, Kim Young-ok, Park Sung-yeon, Kwon Eun-seong, and special guest Sung Dong Il, who brightened the scene with his trademark charisma.
The atmosphere was electric—actors slipped seamlessly into character, creating the sense of stepping back into 1997 at the height of the IMF crisis. At the center of it all were Lee Jun-ho and Kim Min-ha, whose synergy immediately raised expectations for a drama equal parts fierce and heartfelt.
Lee Jun Ho takes on Kang Tae-poong, a free-spirited member of Seoul’s flashy “Orange Tribe,” who is forced to grow up fast and reinvent himself as a businessman during turbulent times. With his confident gaze and commanding delivery, Jun-ho charted Tae-poong’s emotional highs and lows—by turns youthful, fiery, and storm-like—signaling a powerful comeback that fans have eagerly awaited.
Opposite him, Kim Min Ha portrays Oh Mi-seon, the determined eldest daughter who shoulders her family’s burdens while dreaming of becoming an entrepreneur. Her sharp attention to emotional nuance, coupled with her pitch-perfect 90s Seoul dialect, grounded her performance in a way that transported the room back in time. Together, Jun-ho and Min-ha’s chemistry crackled, hinting at a love story and partnership that will anchor the narrative’s heart.
Adding vibrancy is Kim Min Seok as Wang Nam-mo, Tae-poong’s Apgujeong sidekick from the “Ap Street Boys,” whose mischievous charm promises both laughter and romance. Meanwhile, the colorful ensemble of office workers at “Typhoon Company”—Lee Chang-hoon, Kim Jae-hwa, Kim Song-il, and Lee Sang-jin—delivered lively banter that captured the humor, chaos, and camaraderie of workplace survival in a crisis.
Family bonds also stood out. Sung Dong-il and Kim Ji-young, as Tae-poong’s parents, balanced grit and tenderness in portraying a generation that weathered both prosperity and downfall. Kim Young-ok as grandmother Yeom-buni charmed with wit and warmth, while Kwon Han-sol and Kwon Eun-seong captured the struggles and innocence of Mi-seon’s siblings. Park Sung-yeon added raw realism as Nam-mo’s resilient mother.
Tension heightens with the entry of rival father-son duo Kim Sang-ho and Mu Jin-seong, whose cutthroat ambition as corporate competitors threatens to derail Tae-poong and Mi-seon’s journey.
The production team shared, “Typhoon Family is a survival drama rooted in the IMF crisis. It aims to resonate with Generation X who lived through those days, while offering empathy and insight to younger viewers. Just as the ‘typhoon spirit’ once carried people through hardship, we hope this story will inspire courage and hope today.”
Featuring Lee Na-jung’s signature cinematic direction and a stellar ensemble cast, the series is shaping up to be a sweeping drama of resilience, ambition, and love set against one of Korea’s most defining eras. Mark your calendars—Typhoon Family lands on tvN this October.
