Extraordinary Attorney Woo Episode 5 Highlights
In the 4th episode of Extraordinary Attorney Woo, the heroine doubts if she can pursue her career given her autism.
At Hanbada, her colleague, Kwon Min-woo who is also on contract-based employment questioned senior lawyer Jung Myung-seok about Young-woo’s leave of absence.
Understanding Min-woo’s side, Myung-seok acknowledged his junior’s concern but reiterates that fostering a healthy working environment means learning from each other.
“We came all this way by working hard, and we’re claiming the rights that should be rightfully ours. So you should stop trying to get a free ride on other people’s hard work.”
Belatedly learning from Su-yeon that she will be handling a case with Min-woo about an ATM machine technology dispute, Young-woo came unprepared to the meeting with the client.
Su-yeon’s warning about Min-woo’s outstanding reputation as a tactician came true. Aside from not looping her in the case early on, he is also building rapport with the client efficiently.
The case is about tech company Ihwa, which develops cassette security technology for ATM machines. Unfortunately, their competitor, Geumgang, also has the same tech and claimed that the initial idea was launched at an ATM tech fair in the United States.
Ihwa is at a disadvantage since Geumgang has cheaper value and so banks opted to settle with them.
After the first trial, Young-woo tried to ask the client if the defendant’s claim is true, but excused himself to receive a call. Outside the courtroom, she and Min-woo witness the plaintiff and defendant in a verbal brawl. Clearly, a tough sight to determine who is saying the truth.
“You don’t need any of those books. Just remember cham-cham-cham!”
Reading books does not help Young-woo at all. Her bestie Geu-rami proposes cham-cham-cham while looking at someone’s eyes is the best way to determine if people are lying than the useless books she’s reading.
Young-woo responds that looking at someone’s eyes is the hardest thing to do for people with autism. So, Geu-rami alters it for her to just look at the space between the eyebrows.
Expressing her frustrations about Min-woo, Geu-rami couldn’t agree more with how Young-woo labeled her crush as a “jerk”. Playfully, she also asks about the date she helped Jun-ho set up.
Meanwhile, Min-woo is playing basketball with Jun-ho. When his phone rings she speaks with another lawyer belittling Young-woo’s abilities. Young-woo’s whale stories confidante of course didn’t like it, so he summoned his muscles to express his faint rage over Min-woo’s arrogance and rudeness.
“In the spirit of cham-cham-cham, Lee Jun-ho likes Woo Young-woo. Is this true?
Following her bestie’s advice, Young-woo goes on live simulation if cham-cham-cham lie detection is accurate, but it only troubled her father’s restaurant.
Later, she also receives tips from Jun-ho about looking for signs of lying through hands and legs. But Young-woo faintly argues that his friend’s detective’s advice is hard to do.
Beaming at her response, Jun-ho just told her to follow her instinct and talk casually with the person. Young-woo responds that it’s hard for people with autism to trust their instincts and don’t know how to lie.
She explains how an autistic person is used to living in a me-world, thus easily fooled by people. Hence, she always makes sure that her awareness level when being lied is active.
Arriving at Ihwa ATM company, Jun-ho offers to help Young-woo to practice her questions. Bringing out the cute mallet from her bag, she agrees and asks Jun-ho if he likes her.
Mesmerized, her honest question caught Jun-ho off guard and makes an excuse that the CEO of Ihwa won’t be able to answer it.
“Since you are a theater actor, I’ll expect you to be good as a reference witness.”
Simultaneously, Min-woo meets an employee from Leaders, a former tech company that also made the same cassette technology as Ihwa and Geumgang. However, the business no longer exists.
The person revealed to Min-woo how Leader’s tech was similar to Ihwa except for the bill recognition which turned into a loophole since they missed that part during the development process. Min-woo gets crucial information that the product no longer exists in the market.
Back at Ihwa company, Young-woo and Jun-ho meet Director Hwang and the person in charge of the development of the ATM cassette security technology. Diligently following her recently acquired knowledge to assess people who are lying, Young-woo observed the developer meticulously.
Seeing all the warning signs on her, Young-woo goes straight to the point to ask if he attended the engineering fair in 2019 in the US. Director Hwang saves his underling but Young-woo sees him scratching his nose similar to the signs she read in the books about people lying.
She suggests putting the development team leader on the witness stand and also gives points to look confident and reliable for his testimony. Learning he used to be a theater actor, Young-woo quips he should be good to the forthcoming hearing he will attend.
Fortunately, at the trial, the development team leader made quite an impressive and emotional “hard work story” to develop Ihwa cassette security. It led to a favorable result for Ihwa.
“Do you want to be a competent attorney who only wins in court? Or do you want to be an honorable attorney who reveals the truth?”
When Young-woo received a letter from Geumgang’s CEO to believe their plea that both companies used the technology from the US fair, she ends up sharing the letter with Lawyer Kwon. He insists that she owned up to what she decided when she took the case.
Fortunately for Geumgang, they found an old ATM from Leaders which disproves Ihwa’s claim of the patent since theirs was submitted in 2020 whereas Leaders had it in 2019.
However, the business loss will still be unfavorable to them since Ihwa already secured all the clients.
Jun-ho finds Young-woo cooling off her head in front of a fridge. She expressed feeling bad about helping a company that took advantage of the law to monopolize the contracts against its competitor.
She relays that what pains her the most is that she already knew it. Emotionally breaking down, Young-woo remarked feeling ashamed of herself. Jun-ho can only comfort her with a worried gaze.
Going back to her office, she removed the sunflower painting given by the Ihwa Company director and replaced it with the letter from Geumgang CEO.
Extraordinary Attorney Woo Episode 5 Musings
As viewers, we anticipated inner anguish to overwhelm Young-woo at some point. Because as a lawyer, she is expected to confront harrowing situations showing how evil humans can get.
As she mentioned in this episode, the nature of people with autism makes them susceptible to being lied to. They are honest; they rarely get a connection, but when they do they remain loyal.
A perfect example to that is the scene with Su-yeon when she heard Young-woo’s sincere gratefulness for being kind to her.
Beautifully captured, Young-woo’s self-chiding, reflects her intention to grow as a lawyer and to accept that there are unavoidable situations that would challenge her convictions.
Definitely, she’s on the right track the moment we saw her upholding that letter to her office wall.
Episode 5 of Extraordinary Attorney Woo underlined the challenges for small businesses in the same market. In a way, this can be applied to other situations that involve creative works. That there are people who can live claiming an idea that is not theirs and proudly flaunt it.
Accordingly, this chapter of the series presented Young-woo’s established new connections, and we can only hope for it to thrive more – especially the romantic note.
Celebrate the colorful courtroom life of Woo Young-woo in Extraordinary Attorney Woo! International fans can watch the series on Netflix.
