Shin Hye Sun and Kim Jung Hyun are up for some mind games in the third episode of Mr. Queen!
Ratings continues to rise for Mr. Queen. It even clinched a double-digit rating on its 4th episode at 10.4% with episode 3 scoring 9.02% in nationwide viewership ratings.
Following the event of So-yong’s (Shin Hye Sun) night out, her cousin Kim Byeong In’s (Na In Woo) rose to protect her in a fierce swordfight with King Cheoljong (Kim Jung Hyun). The latter appears to be submissive to the Kim clan, when in fact he is secretly rebelling behind their backs. Surprised to see his queen, he thinks something ominous is being planned by the Kim clan.

Now, let’s look back on the highlights of its second week.
So-yong Unleashes Inner Bong-Hwan-Jang-Geum
Failing to foresee the body he is hosting is not at all liquor-friendly; So-yong/Bong-hwan woke up to a bad hangover. Hong-yeon recounts the events of last night telling her cousin Byeong-in came to help.
Craving for some ramyeon, she orders the Royal Kitchen chef to make one, but her picky palate led to her preparing it on her own. An idea strikes her of how she can win her plea to set up the palace’ lake again.
Analyzing the Grand Queen Dowager food preference and making the Royal kitchen’s head chef submit to her request of preparing the food, she sets on a mission. In the end, she gets victorious with the Grand Queen Dowager really liking the food she cooked.
Striking a deal of taking care of her meal, she ultimately secured her wish as an order was made by the most powerful queen to put back the lake in its original state with water.
Byeong-In’s Warning, Hwa-jin’s Cryptic Claim
So-yong learned from Byeong-in about their meeting on the night before her lake accident. Figuring how a lot of people wants her dead, she dismisses his protection vow and tells him she will protect herself.
It was also revealed how Byeong-in harbors love towards So-yong and even kissed her on that same night.
With her inner Bong-hwan still eager to impress Hwa-jin, they go for an archery session. Obviously, just skilled with knives, her archery skills cannot be compared to the royal concubine.
Unable to contain her genuine emotions, Hwa-jin blurts about how she’s being accused of being the culprit in her accident, when she jumped on her own volition.
King Cheoljong’s Secret Mission
Wary about his queen being on the side of the Kim clan, King Cheoljong keeps pushing for chamber visits that is so unlikely him. That is for him to confirm if his queen caught a sniff of his conversation when she accidentally eavesdropped on it.
Finally, he secures a night by coming in early to his queen’s chamber. Coming prepared, he asks for the tea, when she refused to drink alcohol. Just then, the smell of the jasmine tea hit her senses and remembrance of the night she entered the wrong room.
Mr. Queen Episode 3 Musings
Having the fantasy element on Mr. Queen opens a lot of possibility for viewers to ask and hope for its trajectory. Like more back story about So-yong and if there will be a time that she can momentarily regain her consciousness.
It is also to sympathize on King Choeljong’s restricted reign; and the fact that even as a King, he can’t trust his retainers and can only rely on his older brother and not much trusted friends.
With So-yong-Bong-hwan’s goal of reviving the lake in motion, will that really be the key he needs to go back to where he belongs?
