Birthcare Center Series Highlights

Interesting Feature On Balancing Career and Motherhood

Someone can be successful in one aspect of life, but not in another. This is what Hyun Jin experiences as soon as she gives birth to her child. While in her pregnancy, she still can go to work, have meetings with her subsidiaries, and meet an important person even when her amniotic fluid is ruptured.

That’s how workaholic and perfect Hyun Jin is in her work as she is the youngest director. Nevertheless, she meets another aspect of life as a mom that is considered far from success.

Hyun Jin feels her insecurity when she meets with ‘ideal’ young mothers at the birthcare center. She has never had any education about how to take care of babies, even from the basics.

The first time she hears her baby cries, she and her husband, – these two clumsy first-becoming parents, call the nurse at the hospital because they are confused about how to react. It is somehow entertaining, but realistically it is very possible to happen when you are not ready to have this kind of responsibility.

Living in confusion between what is right and wrong as an ‘inexperienced’ mom leads Hyun Jin to follow only the majority and drains herself. For example, there is a debate about the best milk for babies, between breastfeeding and using formula milk.

Hyun Jin only produces a small amount of breast milk and she often stays up at night to pump out the milk. She thinks it is best for her child because the majority do so, but in fact, it is determined by each baby and mom’s personal needs. Later, she can learn about her self-priority and what’s best for her baby.

On Being A Good Mother

After birth, Hyun Jin has to stay a while at the birthcare center. It makes her anxious as she can’t actively do her work at the company. Before she left the birthcare center, she encounters conflicts with her personal needs.

She wants to work as a full-time director again and it tells us that she doesn’t want to be a full-time housewife. However, Eun Jung strongly suggests Hyun Jin only stay at home and prioritize the child. It makes Hyun Jin annoyed, especially when someone in the company is going to back up Hyun Jin’s project. She is very determined to go back to work, but the words from the others make her puzzled.

The beautiful part of this series is when the birthcare center director, Choi Hye Suk (Jang Hye Jin), talks about the value of being a good mom. She says that a good mom is a mom who can find her own happiness and how she can transfer this positive emotion to the child.

This quote makes Hyun Jin bawl with tears and she realizes that she must find her happiness first, that is back to work as a career woman. She is back with confidence and she has her own time management to balance working and caregiving.

Depicting Every Mom’s Struggles

The story also focuses on the dynamics of each mother at the birthcare center. We can learn about the real struggles every mom has. Being a mom is equal to losing her own identity as a girl or woman as she has to sacrifice her whole life for childrearing.

Not only Hyun Jin, but Eun Jung also encounters her own problem. She becomes a full-time mom with three children and she is the one who mostly takes care of the children. Her husband is a famous professional golfer and he always wants to show off his successful life by using Eun Jung. Despite her perfect image, she is also a struggling mom and doesn’t receive proper affection as a wife.

There is also a mom who lost her baby after a series of trials to conceive a child. A mom who feels that she doesn’t deserve a marriage because of her problematic dad. And, a mom who is struggling with her body image as she was a famous actress that becomes obese.

Entertaining Illustrative Scenes

In order to depict the real situation of the characters, this series adds some interactive illustration scenes. They are very dramatic and clear as viewers can relate to them.

One of the most interesting scenes is when Hyun Jin and her husband carry their baby from the hospital building to the car. It is illustrated by a dramatic volcano, and viruses, which looks like they are walking through a battlefield to illustrate how protective these clumsy parents are.

Another scene that catches my attention is when Hyun Jin experiences breast pain. It is illustrated by a hard rock that is very hard to break and slowly it breaks until the milk comes out.

It wants to give us an image of how painful it is when a mom has to produce milk from breastfeeding. This concept is giving its’ own comedy, but it’s really often happening to moms.

Birthcare Center Series Musings

The slice-of-life story of post-partum (post-birth) mothers leads the viewers to realize how great every mother’s struggle was when she gave birth to her offspring. This can increase our awareness to love our mothers more and be a good son or daughter to appreciate her sacrifices.

On the other side, the story is very educative for young mothers and women who want to give birth. We can learn about the basics of milk consumption, the way of carrying babies, changing diapers, and all the textbook details of motherhood.

More importantly, it sheds light on prioritizing mom’s mental and physical health. Not only focusing on the well-being of the child, but the well-being of the mother is very important too.

This series is very plausible for everyone as we can learn about a challenging phase in a woman’s life. It’s a pity that the episodes are too short and we can see another layer of life if it is expanded. However, everyone can get entertained and learn more about life even those who haven’t married.

Finding own happiness and self-worth as mothers are some of the biggest takeaways from the featured stories of the mothers in Birthcare Center.
