Mine Quick Plot Recap
Devoted mother, Seo Hi-soo (Lee Bo Young), used to be an actress, and is now willing to do anything to protect her non-biological son Han Ha-joon (Jung Hyun Joon). Living inside the mansion, she manages to get through the strict policies and keeps up with the demands of high society.
Jung Seo-hyun (Kim Seo Hyung), a competent and natural aristocrat, is the wife of the first son of Hyowon group, Han Jin-ho (Park Hyuk Kwon). She is a caring and supportive sister-in-law to Hi-soo, especially during Han Ji-yong’s (Lee Hyun Wook) death.
Prior to the death of Ji-yong, they run through the events, beginning from the time they hired Kang Ja-kyeong (Ok Ja Yeon) as Ha-joon’s tutor. She then turns out to be Lee Hye-jin, the biological mother of Ha-joon, and unveils the real nature of Ji-yong.
Mine Series Peak Points
Strong and Powerful Female Characters
The main characters from the drama are all ready to give their all to protect and fight for what they claim to be theirs. Hi-soo may appear to be more soft-hearted compared to other members of the family, but she is fearless in breaking some traditions and fighting those who have wronged her.
On the other hand, Seo-hyun appears to be flawless with her management skills. Her husband being the direct bloodline of Hyowon group does not faze her goal to lead the company. Moreover, she has also grown into a character who affirms her sexual identity.
Both of these women, along with other characters in the drama, have broken the traditional views of women. They represent women who actively partake in claiming what is theirs, and no longer passively accept maltreatment.
Reflection of the High Society
Given that the drama revolves around the story inside the family of Hyowon group, characters somehow represent the real nature of family members of conglomerates. Ms. Yang and her daughter Han Jin-hee are the representation of rich people who abuse their authority and power. Their rage towards their powerless workers is a reality and may have depicted a controversy that has been covered by the media.
Contrary to the idea that rich people should be envied, the series has also shown the side that the rich are also pitiful. Despite the prestige and luxury, they still feel extreme loneliness and also become lawbreakers.
Eye-catching Fashion and Art
Every episode feels like a fashion runway with the outfits of Seo-hyun and Hi-soo. As they are daughters-in-law of Hyowon group, they are expected to uphold the elegance, class, and dignity of their family.
Moreover, various artworks are showcased in the drama, which may be appealing to viewers. The combination of art and fashion is aligned with the tone of the drama which features people from the upper class.
Mine Series Musings
With the abundance of dramas that feature the rich and elite people, some scenarios in Mine were no longer shocking. However, this drama can still captivate its viewers’ attention with its story that reminds people that the rich also have unglamorous sides.
It has shown a balanced view on the appealing elegant lifestyle the rich have, and also its downsides in terms of family relations and upbringing. We are reminded that money cannot buy manners as we see Ms.Yang who is crass and vulgar. Looking at the details of the drama, metaphors may be realized.
Seeing empowered women in the drama is a factor most viewers can enjoy despite the common presentation of rich people. They are all competent and break the norm of being women who need to be saved. Moreover, the plot has also incorporated that all types of love should be accepted, despite being different.
Given that the cast of Mine is all competent, they have successfully brought out their characters effectively. Like Hi-soo, I was deceived into thinking that Ji-yong was a nice and gentle character as Soo-hyuk also looks up to him. He only appears as a gentle rich person, but actually has a peculiar hobby of watching dogfighting with human competitors.
Other than the powerful women characters in the drama, I also appreciate how the drama moved away from the typical move of rich families in the aspect of real love. Although they may have offered Yu-yeon money at first to stay away from Soo-hyuk, Seo-hyun has come to acknowledge and support their love. She may not be the biological mother of Soo-hyuk, but she accepted and supported his feelings.
Owning One’s Identity
Material belongings and some people in our lives may all be temporary. All of these may be lost sometime in the future. Following the story of Seo-hyun and Hi-soo, viewers may realize that one’s identity is something one can truly call their own.
Embracing our own identity is the greatest gift we could give to ourselves. If there’s something in this world that cannot be bought, stolen, or destroyed, it is our own identity.
