A hot spot especially during autumn, Jeonju Hanok Village is a filming location of tvN’s weekend drama, Under The Queen’s Umbrella.
Under The Queen’s Umbrella threads the story of Hwaryeong, a spirited queen who tries to rein in her rowdy sons in order to make one of them the next king of Joseon, while her competitors vie to snatch the throne.
Tackling the royal education of the royal family of Joseon, the motivated goal of royal family mothers will be conveyed in this sympathetic and touching story.
Scenes in the historical drama were shot all over the village such as Jeonju Hyanggyo and Gyeonggijeon Hall. Notably, the Gyeonggijeon Hall, which enshrined the royal portrait of King Taejo, the first king of the Joseon Dynasty, is considered a must-visit spot.
Along with that, the ginkgo trees that are 300 to 400 years showcasing the vibrant autumn colors are also captured in the picture of the series. For K-Drama fans, Love in the Moonlight and Sungkyunkwan Scandal were also featured in Jeonju Hanok Village.
Jeonju Hanok Village is located in the city of Jeonju and overlaps Pungnam-dong and Gyo-dong. There are 735 traditional Korean hanok houses. While the rest of the city has been industrialized, Hanok Village retains its historical charms and traditions.
According to Visit Korea, the charm of Jeonju Hanok Village lies in the hanok buildings’ unique roof edges, which are slightly raised to the sky. Hanok houses are generally divided into two sections, anchae and sarangchae. Sarangchae is where the men dwell. Because men and women had to remain separated, anchae is situated deep inside the house so that it is secretive and quiet.
Another trait of hanok is that all the houses are heated with ondol, a unique floor heating system. Since Koreans enjoy sitting, eating, and sleeping on the floor, it needs to remain heated in winter. To experience what hanok is like, visitors can either book a hanok accommodation or visit the Hanok Life Experience Hall.
Make sure to add Jeonju Hanok Village to your K-Travel bucket list!
