K-Movie Spotlight: “20th Century Girl” Glimmers With Its Nostalgic Fuzzy Feeling of Love
Portraying a Teenager
Debuting at a young age in 2003, Kim Yoo Jung who is now in her 20s portrays Na Bo-ra as a teenager in the movie. Despite having aspects she wants to improve on, the actress believed her character was still expressed well.
“It was that part that I paid the most attention to while doing this work. I tried to express it well so that I could think, ‘I was like that at the time,’ but when I look back on myself, there are parts that I regret, but I still think that Bo-ra came out very innocent and cute.”
To exhibit the innocence and beauty of her character, the actress remembers setting her mind first.
“First of all, I tried to make my mind comfortable and shoot…”
In that, she states how she put less makeup on, fixed her hair herself, and continued to wear her character’s regular outfit.
“…So, I tried to remove as much hair and makeup as possible, and I used to tie my hair myself. And I actually tried to make my body comfortable in Bora’s outfit by continuing to wear it.”
With much care in her portrayal of Na Bo-ra, another point she focused on is the small details in her acting since the purity and beauty of that age could be seen in those also.
“I think I saw a lot of friendly facial expressions because I thought a lot about the way I expressed it…”
Understanding the Year 1999
Having been born in 1999, the year the movie is set, actress Kim Yoo Jung finds difficulty in relating to that era.
“Because I did not experience that era, I could not sympathize with the events of that time.”
However, what the actress can relate to is the passion her character has in school.
“It was a work that I filmed with emotions. I also had a passionate personality when I was in school, so I sympathized a lot while watching the movie.”
Working hard to portray her role, she consulted a lot with the director who is most familiar at that time.
“I had a lot of fun while acting. Since the director was a student at that time in 1999, I got a lot of advice from the director and we talked a lot.”
Moreover, she recalls taking reference from Lovers’ Concerto which is similar to the movie’s disposition of love and friendship.
“I really like director Lee Han’s ‘Lovers’ Concerto’, and I thought of that a lot while watching ’20th Century Girl’…”
Given the opportunity to see computers, floppy disks, and beepers, the actress appreciates having the experience to use analog devices.
“… In the movie, taking pictures with a film camera appears, and I also like that…so I actually used a film camera to take a lot of pictures at the site.”
Third Time Working with Han Hyo Joo
Making a special appearance, Han Hyo Joo playing as adult Na Bo-ra garners attention. Having worked in Iljimae and Dong Yi together in the past, the movie becomes the two actresses’ third collaboration, which Kim Yoo Jung finds significant.
“It is difficult that a relationship with one person can come that long, but this itself is a little meaningful to me.”
Recounting the positive reaction of Han Hyo Joo in accepting the role, Kim conveyed her heartfelt gratitude.
“She said that she was willing to do it again, so I was very happy and grateful.”
Moreover, at the movie’s premiere, the actress recalls having more of a personal talk with Han Hyo Joo.
“I think we talked more about our daily life than we talked about the movie. Thank you for saying that the movie came out interesting and you were happy. Through this work, I think the relationship has been renewed. It was really good.”
With the warmth of love the movie radiates throughout, Kim Yoo Jung describes love as comforting, protecting, and encouraging each other well.
