Breaking new ground in the reality dating genre, The Boyfriend, Japan’s pioneering same-sex romance reality series, celebrates love in all its diversity.
Starting July 9, viewers can tune in every Tuesday for a total of 10 episodes delivered in four weekly installments.
Set against the backdrop of the “Green Room” beach house by the sea, the show features nine men embarking on a journey to find love. Over the course of a month, they live together and take turns operating shifts at a peppermint green coffee truck, forging deep friendships and undergoing personal growth along the way.
Hosting duties are handled by a diverse lineup of personalities including MEGUMI, Chiaki Horan, Thelma Aoyama, drag queen Durian Lollobrigida, and Yoshimi Tokui, promising viewers an emotional rollercoaster.
Executive producer Dai Ota, who oversees live-action originals at Netflix Japan, shares the series’ vision: “Our initial goal was to showcase the personalities and friendships of these young men. We wanted to emphasize not only romance but also the bonds formed through shared experiences and personal development.”
Chief producer and director Keisuke Hishida from Kyodo Television (known for ‘Ainori Love Wagon: Asian Journey’ and ‘Love Deadline’) reflects on the unexpected miracles that unfolded during filming: “I discussed with the cast how growth and meaningful experiences stem from shared friendships, youth, and challenges, not just romantic relationships.”
Model, DJ, and YouTube vlogger Taiki, serving as producer and casting director, expresses his satisfaction with the series’ development: “I’m thrilled with how this series came together. I listened to each participant carefully, aiming to create a show that leaves everyone feeling valued and cherished.”
This bold venture into same-sex romance on reality TV promises to redefine the genre with its heartfelt exploration of love and personal connections.
